Derek shook his head. "Got a place by his school. But now he's doing an internship at the FBI."

He looked super proud about that.

"He'll be fantastic at that," Jack said honestly. (He would have looked at FBI itself, were it not for his tiny not-a-citizen and not-from-this-universe-or-century issues.) "I'm jealous. How's he liking it?"

"He shot himself in the toe." Now he could joke about it. After panicking for a week.

Jack let out a shocked burst of laughter.

"Tell me you aren't serious."

"A bullet ricocheted when he was at their shooting range," Derek said with a sigh like he couldn't believe this could happen to Stiles.

Jack blinked cautiously.

"Well," he said, after a thoughtful nibble of funnel cake, "at least he probably learned range safety from it."

"I thought I was the one who got shot in the relationship," Derek said, so deadpan it might not have been a joke.

But it was. Mostly.

"Maybe Stiles was feeling left out," Jack suggested. "...don't do that, by the way. Being shot hurts."

Derek nodded in complete agreement with that. "It hasn't happened in a while at least."

"Me either, thankfully," Jack reported. "Life might even be calming down for both of us."

He gave Derek a speculative look. "What are you doing while Stiles is at FBI?"

"I have investments." That Laura put together. "I have a garden," he added a little sheepishly.

It was domestic and far from squatting in an abandoned building.

"That sounds so cozy," Jack said, amused. "Are you taking up knitting yet?"

Derek huffed in annoyance and gave him a gentle shove. "No. Stiles would never let me live it down if I did."

"As long as he's keeping you in line," Jack said, elbowing Derek in return. "Vampires can knit, but for us it'd just be silly."

Jack laughed against his fist. "Exactly," he said, bobbing his head. "Put flowers and clever sayings all over every piece of cloth we can find."

"Morbid," Jack accused. "You'd have to put in some mistletoe, at least, for contrast."

He was the seriousest werewolf.
