"Depends on the people," Sparkle replied, and then, after a moment's further consideration, he added, "and on the teeth, I guess. I mean, I've been a vampire around here before. More than once."

And his look-it's-complicated father figure didn't even need to be a vampire to have a mouth worth being concerned about.

"But really, seriously, I'll probably just end up going through the costumes at work again this weekend and then coming in at the last possible minute to pull some, like, frilly period piece off the racks anyway."

"Is Halloween a big thing around here?" Miguel asked. "I really hadn't been planning on much of anything yet."

"That one kind of depends on the people too," Sparkle confessed. "There'll probably be at least some Halloween parties or something closer to the day. Maybe a few people with kids'll go trick-or-treating, so if you live in, like, a house, it can't hurt to have some candy by the door. And... I mean. Fandom. It could even get weird. Wouldn't be a first, I'm sure."

"I guess I'll ask Nathan if we usually get trick-or-treaters." Miguel stopped and blinked. "Or if we're having a party in the house. I have no idea."

"I mean, there aren't even many little kids on the island," Sparkle noted, "but it is totally possible to hit every living space and business in one night, like, easy. You guys could be the cool house with the full-size chocolate bars. Every kid likes the cool house with the full-size chocolate bars."

He paused.

"The cool houses are less likely to get egged, anyway."

Sparkle had always been the little jackass with the carton of eggs.

Miguel lived in a place with almost no detatched housing. When your neighbor lived in the same building, there wasn't a whole lot of egging.

"Not my house; I'm only renting a room," Miguel said, grinning.

"Do I want to know how weird this place can get on Halloween?"

"Go team renters," Sparkle laughed, shaking his head. "And hell, who even knows? This place likes holidays and acts up depending on how it's feeling at the time, you know? So..."

He shrugged.

"For all I know, we could end up with trick-or-treating gremlins and all spend the night running around fucked up on their venom."

"You really don't know where they've been," Sparkle pointed out. "On a list of animals on the island I want to actually have in my mouth for any reason, gremlins rank way near the bottom, behind the teal deer, the furry fish, the giant squid, and the fuckin' alot of bear traps."
