Homecoming Carnival Post II | The Park | Friday, October 21

Of course the Carnival offers plenty of food too, and there are rides and games for everyone to enjoy.

There is also glitter, to no ones surprise.

And like Steve and Eliot weren't having the exact same conversation.

"Right? They do not need each other as bad influences."

Because that's what everyone thought when they saw Captain America. 'Bad influence.'

He was a drama queen who jumped off buildings and took the time to remove Avengers badges from his uniform after quitting the team because he was just that petty.

And Tony loved him dearly.

God help him.

"You know, I used to worry I was a bad influence on him."

And ripped logs when he was angry. Can't forget that.

"...And then, like, you had more'n a single conversation with him?" Hardison checked.

"He's sneaky," Tony replied with a laugh. "No, it was probably leftover hero worship from when I was a kid."

"Real talk, was it ever weird for you?" Hardison asked, his head tilted slightly, no judgment, just curiosity. "Gettin' into a dude that you'd idolized growin' up?"

"Well, it was weird to meet him. Twice, in fact," Tony said. "Which sort of separated Captain America the big, grand concept from Steve the actual person."

"Meetin' two different version, or...?"

"Two versions," he replied. "Barton, Kitty, Jono... similar worlds, but not quite the same."

"What are the main differences between this Steve an' the other one?" Hardison asked. "Is it weird, goin' from one to the other?"

That brought Tony up short for a moment. "Older. Much closer to my age. Different sense of humor. And I haven't really gone between them in a while. Mine died."

"Aww, damn man, I'm sorry," he said, going to rest a companionable hand on Tony's shoulder if he'd allow it. "Losin' folks is always hard, especially when they're crew."

And even having another Steve on the island didn't stop the pain of losing the first.

Tony allowed it, shrugging a little with the ease of someone who repressed emotions all the time.

"But yeah, it is... weird. I cannot even imagine the sort of reactions where he's from."

Don't think he didn't see you doing that, Tony. He'd worked with Nate I-Sublimate-My-Feelings-With-Alcohol Ford for years. He wasn't gonna call you on it, but he definitely noticed.

"Does that mean he has two Tonys?" he asked instead, keeping their conversation light.

Hey, he was doing his best here! And his best involved waiting until he was along to have a dramatic breakdown.

"He does and they do not get along very well. His whole team is... weird." The second darkest timeline in his opinion.

Dammit, Tony. This was literally what friends were for! Even moreso than sending vengeful porn magazines to people!

"That's hard for me to imagine," Hardison admitted. "Y'all just work, you know? Good thing the island let him get to know proper!Tony."

Tony laughed at that. "My Steve beat the crap out of all of us when we first found him," he said fondly. "Poor guy wouldn't believe us when we said it was the future. So, I'm not too surprised they got off on the wrong foot in another universe."

"It ain't fair," Hardison declared. "For someone who gives such puppy eyes an' looks like such a damn Boy Scout to secretly be so pugnacious, yo."

"Hidden depths, my friend. Hidden depths."

Of sheer stubbornness.

"Of belligerence!"

Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

No, this didn't come from Hardison and Steve fighting over pizza, who would ever think that?!

Of course not!

"Oh, so I see you've met that side of him."

"He has a lot of opinions about modern food," Hardison sniffed. "An' most of 'em wrong. Like some guy growin' up during the Depression knows anythin' about what good food is supposed to taste like!"

No one wanted to eat cracker-crust pizza, Steve! No one! Deep dish forever!

Hardison was talking to yet another native New Yorker, so...

"He doesn't like sushi, that's for sure. Which is sad."

Tony was also wrong, but a valuable part of friendship was overlooking your friends flaws.

Even the grievous ones.

"But he thinks banana-flavored candy is somehow acceptable an' not a sin against heaven," Hardison pointed out.

Just wait till you got the jello salad email, Hardison. Just wait.

One day Tony would let on that at least half of that was Steve trolling them all.

"He also drinks protein shakes every morning," Tony said, making a face.

That still left the other half.

"See, you said morning so that's already offensive," Hardison pointed out. "Especially since late nights are when you're most productive!"

Everyone knew the best hacking occurred between the hours of two and five a.m!
