When Kitty got to the bar, she found that they'd gotten a shipment of a lot of holiday spices and mixers and such. Like, a lot. Like, she didn't know how to use it all up before the actual holidays.

"Funny thing," Kanan said as he sidled up to the bar and set a squeaky UFO toy on the counter. "Apparently I'm not usually invisible."

This had come as a great relief when he'd woken up on Wednesday morning last week, honestly.

"Oh, thank god, that was you," Kitty said. "I maybe spent part of the night hoping I didn't think I was talking to you when I wasn't."

[uncertain_dume]

"I have the feeling I left a few people wondering the same," Kanan replied. "Pretty sure the new owner of the T&C actually thought I was a talking toy."

Which, while admittedly hilarious, was also fortunately untrue.

"There's a tiny, immature part of me that hopes you never tell them otherwise," Kitty admitted.

"Can I still get one of those holiday drinks if I admit that I already cleared that one up?"

He was kind of disappointed in himself too, for what it was worth.

"You sure do," she assured him. "We have peppermint, nutmeg, egg nog... just... so much stuff."

[uncertain_dume]

"What do you suggest for a guy who isn't afraid to admit that he has a sweet tooth?" Kanan spread his hands a little. "I'm more or less familiar with standard Earth fare these days, but the seasonal stuff still escapes me."

Except pumpkin spice. Kanan was good and familiar with that, now.

[throughaphase]

"Peppermint," she said immediately. "A White Russian is vodka, kahlua, half and half, and then peppermint."

[uncertain_dume]

"Then that's what I'll have," Kanan replied, snapping his fingers and grinning, then collecting the toy from the counter to tuck away on his belt. "The staff at Luke's occasionally get into the mood for peppermint, but I'm putting faith in you, here. The first time they introduced me to it, it was with mint toothpaste, followed immediately by an orange."

Jerks.

Kitty stared. "That is diabolical."

"Tell me about it," Kanan agreed. "I spent months thinking I hated oranges."

[throughaphase]

"I'll teach you about screwdrivers sometime," Kitty said, starting on the drink. "Just, you know, not after peppermint that is so mean."

[uncertain_dume]

"I look forward to learning about them," Kanan replied, grinning as he settled forward and watched. "Also not after peppermint, because I don't want to spend another few months thinking I hate those."

[throughaphase]

"So, is the staff over there actually just set on torturing you guys?" Kitty wondered.

[uncertain_dume]

"I'm pretty sure that's exactly what they're set on," Kanan agreed. "My shift is the pancake shift. But they seem to have stopped making so many that they come down in pancake avalanches that actively bury the busboy, these days."

He rolled his eyes.

"I don't pretend to understand them. I just work there."

[throughaphase]

"I have so many questions," she admitted, finishing off the drink and passing it over.

"When it comes to that crew, I can't promise I'll have any answers," Kanan chuckled, taking the drink and lifting it up in a friendly toast. "But hey, try me, I'll see what I can manage."

[throughaphase]

"First, does pancake shift mean breakfast, or is there just a pancake... thing?"

Had to ask there.

[uncertain_dume]

"Thing," Kanan sighed, and then paused to punctuate that with a mouthful of liquor. Oh, that was nice. He grinned and gave Kitty a thumbs-up in appreciation before continuing on. "There was a while there where there wasn't any point in putting anything but pancakes on the specials board. There would just be mountains of those. Don't ask me what they did with the ones that didn't sell every week. I have no idea."

"I mean... it feels like a good way to get sick of pancakes really fast," Kitty said.

[uncertain_dume]

"I never want to eat another pancake again as long as I live," Kanan confirmed. "... Unless they get crazy with the fruit toppings. Then it's fine."

He wasn't actually that choosy. He'd eaten rations before.

He'd eaten worse than rations before.

[throughaphase]

She nodded. "Okay, next question. How literal is 'an avalanche of pancakes buried a guy'?"

[uncertain_dume]

"It's happened twice now. I've had to dig the busboy out at least once."

He'd had it coming, too.

[throughaphase]

"Do you get hazard pay?"

You should get hazard pay, Kanan.

[uncertain_dume]

"Only when the tentacle thing living in the freezer gets into its moods, and I'm not even completely sure I get it then."

Kanan didn't seem to mind. Actually, he seemed kind of amused. Kanan was apparently a crazy person.

[throughaphase]

...

"....Tentacle thing?"

Mind you, this was not worrying for Kitty, she just hadn't expected it.

[uncertain_dume]

"Yeah, but it usually doesn't come out until you've ridden the trolley deeper in," Kanan said with a shrug. "Somehow, the diner is one of the more interesting jobs I've had in my lifetime. I didn't see that coming."

[throughaphase]

"There's a trolley?! I'm coming in more," Kitty decided.

[uncertain_dume]

"It's in the freezer," Kanan noted, "but if you come in on a Sunday, I can take you on the tour."

There wasn't technically 'a tour,' but the Luke's freezer was something that had to be experienced.

[throughaphase]

"I'm absolutely doing this," Kitty said. "I have no choice. It has to be seen."

[uncertain_dume]

"Dress warm," Kanan replied, grinning. "We can make it an excursion for whatever ends up on the dinner menu that day. If we're making a journey out of it, there might as well be some payoff."

And he was pretty sure they had some nerf tucked away somewhere near what was loosely referred to as the back.
