Breq had decided that rather than listening to music today, she should try all the instruments in the shop, trying to find out which ones she liked the best. She had taken her gloves off -- which, if anyone knew or cared, would make it clear that she was mostly playing at being Radchaai -- and picked up one of the basses. She wasn't bad for a beginner, and she had played other instruments before, with other bodies, but she was still definitely a beginner.
The Silence seemed to take offence to that, which was quite unfair, since it was a music shop, and people should be allowed to try out instruments. Breq was stubborn, however, and played without the instrument making a sound, until her fingertips were sore. Then she continued with the keyboards.
