Luke's, Sunday
Kanan had only just set foot in the door of Luke's when the word, "No," escaped his lips.
The kitchen staff all turned to fix him with wide-eyed, totally innocent looks. From under the square pancakes they were wearing on their heads.
"You didn't graduate yesterday, those aren't mortarboards, and wearing pancakes on your head is unhygienic," Kanan said, slipping behind the counter and shaking his head at the lot of them.
"Yeah," the busboy said, "but Sundays are pancake days."
Kanan just sighed and rolled his eyes.
Today's Specials:
Mortarboard Pancakes! They're just regular pancakes, but they're square!
"How has Eliot not fired you all yet?"
The dishwasher grinned and tried to slap a pancake onto Kanan's head.

Either way, there was no way she wasn't at least stopping by.
"I can't stay for too long," she announced upon arrival, "I've got a party to get ready for, but I need to at least get a hug and maybe some pancakes to go. I, uh...didn't get to finish brunch."

"Hey, Summer," he said, holding open his arms. "Hugs are on the house. And sure, we'll throw in some pancakes, too."
They were square.

"On the house?" she asked as she moved in to take that hug and maybe seem like she was trying to crush him a little bit in her hug back. "What, have you been charging people for hugs, BDG?"
no subject
And maybe three people could cash in on that bonus, so...

Her arms dropped to her side a bit limply, as if she didn't know what exactly to do with them if they weren't hugging.
"So," she ventured, "I'm leaving tomorrow morning. Mom's really serious about this whole happy family bullshit. But, remember, I'm just a text or a call away. Even if Portalocity's not an option; I can steal Grampa Rick's portal gun, and I've gotten pretty good at figuring out where he hides all his crap. If you guys go on a bunch of missions without me, I am going to be so pissed. Trust me, I'm not gonna be bent up about missing a few Econ or Marketing classes that my mom's paying for anyway. And don't do anything stupid. I would say I'd be pissed off if you went and did something stupid, but I'm trying to be pragmatic. I'd have to be pissed off all the time if I said that."

The resettlement camp that the Empire had shoved the farmers into. Leave it to the downtrodden to come up with tongue-in-cheek names for things blaming the person responsible.
"You know I'm just a text or a call away, too," he added. "Between portals and comm devices, the only thing you'll really be missing out on is pancakes anyway."

She did glance toward the...comparatively modest specials offering today.
"Though I'll admit," she said, "none of them with quite the...creative flair they've got here."
Said the girl with a pineapple pizza jello hanging out in the common room fridge right now.

But there was a thoughtful pause.
"Maybe one order of head pancakes."
For her brother. Mwa ha ha.

"The pancakes that have been on people's heads are not for sale."
This was answered with an 'awwww' from the kitchen. Kanan rolled his eyes again.
"But I can hook you up with some pancakes for the road, to eat or wear at your own leisure."

Which faded out slightly into a little awkward shift before she said, "I kinda wanted this stop to be all positive stuff, but permission to rant a little?"
Man, who would she rant to back home? Her thumbs were going to get a workout sending him everything she would usually tell him in a long, uninterrupted stream of ranting...

"So," she started, "guess what my parents decided to tell me over brunch, like, literally not even half an hour ago?"
no subject
"I have no idea," he replied. "But I'm guessing it's something frustrating?"
no subject
....frustrating?
Maybe a little.
But it did feel really good to get it out again.

"So they didn't just stomp all over your celebration to tell you this, they did it at exactly the right time for you to have to go back home to it, too," he summarized. "E chu ta, Summer, that's rough. You ever need... I don't know... money to book a hotel room or something to get some distance while you're back there, let me know."
He wasn't made of credits, exactly, but it seemed like... not a great situation, overall.

So she just grimaced a little, then allowed a faint smile at the offer, a smile that quickly found purchase toward a smirk.
"I could always just come crash at you and Hera's. I never did get to that kitchen renovation I," threatened, "promised you."
no subject
"I mean, there's one bed and a sofa, and the bed's already spoken for," Kanan replied. And no, he wasn't mentioning that it was spoken for by both of them, because that always seemed to turn into A Thing. "But you're always welcome if you need a breather. And Hera's got two extra sleeping quarters on the Ghost if it comes to that. Not that I should be volunteering out parts of her ship..."
He didn't figure Hera would mind terribly if someone needed to crash in one of the empty rooms.

"No clue," he admitted. "She might take Stance out at some point, but she could just as easily be in the scrapyard, doing maintenance on the Ghost. Have you got her number? You can always call and check."
