Syndulla Scrap, Friday

After the last fairly successful run, Hera was looking further into Lothal and the places like it and what had happened to the farmers. She sincerely doubted it was the only place like that, even as she wanted to smack someone in the Empire for being so stupid as to cut off so much of their own food supply.

Then again, she wanted to smack them frequently for other reasons too, so that wasn't much of a difference.

Anyway, she was doing a bit of research using the Ghost's connections, but she had Chopper on sensors in case someone dropped by, so the scrap yard was open!

"The very same," Liam nodded. "And, I mean, they're fine. But they're limited to atmospheric travel and there's no ID drive."

"No?" Liam said, curiously. "How does a hyperdrive work?"

"The drive opens a portal into interdimensional space, which exists between the physical dimensions. ID space essentially 'crumples' the distance between two points, making it possible to cross great distances in an instant- as long as you know your entry and exit co-ordinates," Liam explained.

Liam nodded. "There are definitely some similarities," he agreed. "Can you access hyperspace without a ship?"

"The Taelons were... generous, with their gifts to humanity," Liam said, in a tone that made it clear that those gifts had come with a price. "But not generous enough to give us unrestricted access to ID space. Shuttles were reserved for those who worked with the Companions directly." most of whom had implanted motivational imperatives, of course, "So instead a network of Portal stations were built on Earth. They've pretty much replaced most forms of long-distance terrestrial travel."

"The main difference is that they use pre-programmed touchpoints instead of custom ones the way a shuttle can," Liam explained. "But otherwise, it accesses interdimensional in the same way."
