Demon Marcus, Sunday
Sparkle was antsy today. For a few reasons, really, not the least of which being that he was going to be heading to Coruscant tonight, partly to play buffer between Atton and Mical, partly because he actually found himself missing the place, and partly just because he was telling himself that he could. It had been almost two years since that thing with the Iridonic Horn, and if two years wasn't enough time to get his head around something that he knew, logically, probably wouldn't happen again, then he never would.
And he couldn't afford to keep writing off even those places that had been good to him up until some fluke caught him off-guard.
The other reason, and this wasn't a small one either, was the stupid holiday today. Which he'd forgotten about until he came in and some little kid wandered in looking for something nice for a gift, and he wound up spending twenty minutes going through cute scarves, kind of resenting everything. It wasn't the kid's fault, and so he'd been polite and helpful the whole time, but if any of his customers came in and asked him what he was planning for Mothers Day, he was going to lose it.
Anyway, Demon Marcus was open, and the end of Sparkle's shift couldn't possibly come quickly enough. Shit.

"Ah, right. Basement." Sparkle wrinkled his nose. "Well, then yeah, she's going to want to get outside. Not even being able to look out a window to see birds? That's rough on a cat. You might be able to cheat it a little by turning on the nature channel on TV and letting her watch things move around there, but it's not fresh air."
no subject
"I take her to the park sometimes. There is a dog she likes to play with."
That Seivarden put up with that showed how much she spoiled Issa.

Sparkle gave a fond little smile at that.
"It's the rare cat who likes to play with dogs," he noted. "I'm glad she's got a friend, though. That must at least get some of the zoomies out."
no subject
"I'd prefer another friend, but if it makes her happy. I think the dog distracts her from getting stuck in trees."
no subject
Zoomies was a perfectly scientific word! In the same way as 'toe beans' was. So not very.
"Aww," Sparkle laughed, shaking his head. "What's wrong with the dog?"
Not the dog, Spark.

... Sparkle could only imagine what Seivarden's idea of 'annoying' was, but he kept his mouth shut. No point touching on that beast.
"Fair enough," he replied, shaking his head. "I almost wish I had a cat here, you know? Then Issa could at least have another playmate."

Sparkle gave her a wry smile and shook his head.
"I respect Atton too much for that," he replied. "I'm not going to trample all over that just so that Issa can have a playmate. If I was going to be here all summer and I had more employees, I'd consider just getting a cat for the shop, but any cat I get now would be alone six days of the week."

She put one of the t-shirst back on the rack.
"Are you going away?"
no subject
Sparkle had to bite back his own irritation. What the fuck had she meant, if not what she'd said?
Deep breath. Exhale.
"Yes. Yes I am. I'll be back for my shifts here and at my other job, but I might even miss a few."
no subject
Seivarden had to admit she felt a little bit jealous, even before knowing where Sparkle was going and what he was going to do. At least he had somewhere to go, and possibly with someone.

"Another planet," Sparkle said vaguely. "It's one I've spent time on before. Beautiful place. Like, even the weather is controlled. Good food, too. I do a lot of experimenting with cooking there."
no subject
Now she was jealous.
"Who are you going with?"
no subject
"Atton," Sparkle replied, shrugging. "It's his galaxy. He has some business to do there, so I get to come along for the ride."
no subject
She really wanted to go to a beautiful, weather controlled planet with good food and friends.
no subject
"Roommate, best friend, practically my brother, yeah," Sparkle agreed. "We've been through hell together. I'm going as a favour to him."
no subject
"I hope it will be enjoyable, and not just a favour."
She did mean it, she wasn't petty, it was just that...
She pushed back memories of being on leave on beautiful planets in pleasant company.

Hey, Atton had some issues with cats. Sparkle didn't like it, but if that was the one rule he was really enforcing, he could live with it. Anyway, Sparkle got his revenge by sneaking vegetables into his meals sometimes.
"Yeah, that's the hope," Sparkle agreed lightly. "And if it doesn't work out, then hey, I come back. No big deal."
The last time he'd been to Coruscant, he'd been stabbed and kidnapped, and had killed a man trying to escape from his own execution. It had to go better than that.
no subject
"I suppose Issa will keep me busy if she continues wanting to go out all the time."
When in doubt, talk about the cat.
no subject
"Yup," Sparkle agreed. "Cats are good for that. I'd say put your foot down and teach her some discipline, but hey, you don't even have windows, I don't know what to tell you."
no subject
no subject
"Can't say I have, no," Sparkle said mildly, "but I try to avoid pissing off the troopers."
Not a trooper, Sparkle.
no subject
She snorted.

Sparkle opened his mouth. And then closed it again. And then tilted his head at her.
He was just picturing this exchange, and was inclined to give the officer the benefit of the doubt. He'd gotten snark from Seivarden just today, honestly answering a question about why he didn't have a cat.
"Some people just don't see it the way you do," he settled on. "It happens."
