It wasn't like Kanan was going to let something like a new batch of students stop him from showing up at the park for his weekly sword lesson with Tip.

Sure, one of those students was a Mandalorian, and sure, most of Mandalore seemed to be on the Empire's side, and sure, that had him somewhat worried, but Sabine seemed to have a pretty level head, going by the... two conversations he'd had with her so far. Hell, she'd even asked to be his TA yesterday, which was promising? Probably?

Erring on the side of caution, his lightsaber was broken down into its component pieces and was being safely stored away in various places on his belt for the time being regardless. It felt strange to be going through somewhat restrained versions of his usual forms using a bamboo sword, but if he pretended he was just trying to learn some of the Earth martial arts that he'd seen during his time here....?

This felt weird. Maybe he'd just play fetch with his dog again until someone showed up for a spar or a lesson.

"Good, save yourself."

Okay that was not what he meant, but again, trauma.

"That's more or less the idea, yeah."

Hey, it worked on a few levels anyway.

"Was that supposed to sound as deep as it did?" she wondered.

Kanan was quiet for perhaps a second too long before answering.

"Absolutely."

Look, he was still working on getting back into the swing of this whole Jedi thing.

Rey smiled a little at that, and let him off the hook. "All right, so I don't want to break your weapon before you get a new one, which leaves..."

"Hand-to-hand," Kanan offered, "or you pick up the other bamboo sword."

Or they just played fetch with Stance, who was watching them intently from by the bench, his tail wagging with enthusiasm.

"I don't really practice ha d to hand," she admitted. That was more whatever she needed to do in the moment. "I can try the bamboo. Or there's poor neglected Stance."

Puppyyyyyy.

Kanan glanced toward the dog, who was being so good, guys, so good! And he laughed.

"Oh, go on," he said, waving toward Stance. "He's been very well behaved today, he deserves some playtime."

"And he looks so happy." It was impossible not to smile around a happy dog, Rey was pretty sure.

"Pretty sure he always looks happy," Kanan replied, still grinning. "Hey, Stance, buddy. C'mere!"

And oh, that dog came at them at a gallop.

"Now I think I'd feel really badly if we had done anything else," Rey said, preparing for all the pets.

"Nah, don't feel bad," Kanan laughed. "He gets plenty of attention. It's just also important for him to know when to stay put, especially if I ever end up bringing him back home with me."

Incoming, Rey. Stance was headed right for you, ready for a big affectionate tackle.

Rey was ready, crouching down to give him all the love while also trying to stay up. "He's probably not very helpful on runs."

"He'd be great for morale," Kanan offered, looking thoughtful as he supervised puppy playtime. "He's not quite qualified to be a therapy dog, but maybe training him for it couldn't hurt."

"Isn't he therapy just by being around?" Rey pointed out, attention still totally on Stance.

"Only for people who aren't afraid of dogs," Kanan pointed out with a shrug. "I'm guessing there are plenty of reasons somebody might not want a happy dog up in their business, though I can't think of many offhand."

"But look at his face, Kanan."

It didn't help that there wasn't much Rey was afraid of like this, so she was stuck on the awesomeness.

"He does have a pretty great face, doesn't he?"

He had seen it! It was a great face! Not much like the hounds he was used to. More wolfish, even. But it was a good, happy face.

"And people here probably could use this kind of therapy."

And therapy in general, let's be real.

"Oh, around here, definitely." Kanan nodded. He couldn't deny that. "At least people around here recognize him as a dog. That doesn't hurt."

"If I didn't recognize him as a dog, I don't think I'd care," Rey mused.

Because look at that face!

What a great face!

"Fair enough," Kanan laughed, crossing his arms over his chest and watching. "If you can get him to roll over, try rubbing his belly. He loves that."

And Rey got straight to trying to get him to do that. "You're allowed to pet your own dog, too, you know."

"Oh, I know," Kanan agreed, "but I get to see him more. Far be it from me to interrupt your puppy time."

Or the puppy's Rey time.

"I'm glad I get to die s time with him," she said, and quickly added, "And you."

Not trying to ignore Kanan in favor of the best dog or anything.
