Kanan stepped into the diner today for his shift and immediately had to duck, lest he take a flying pancake to the face.

He stood up slowly, one eyebrow raised.

The staff all froze.

"Who did that?"

The staff all pointed at one another.

Kanan looked around the room. Pancakes. Everywhere.

"Well, you'll all clean this up before any customers arrive, or I'll be burying you under them."

"There aren't enough pancakes for you to bury us all under them, you know," the busboy pointed out.

"I meant they'll be used to mark a shallow grave out back."

The staff quickly got to work cleaning up the mess.

Kanan eyed the specials board, not completely trusting it, but settled in for a day at work all the same.

It was Sunday, so, duh, of course Summer was going to pester Kanan with texts. They couldn't let tradition die due to distance.

Yeah. First week of classes, yaaaay. instead i guess in college, its going over a million syllbuses instead of a million introductions. syllabi? idk. but right now we're in the dimension that released a ballfondlers movie franchise, because they just made a sequel. we're getting ice cream before the movie, even though it all still has flies in it. its not too bad if you just get it blended up in a milkshake tho.

You could almost pretend it was chocolate chips or seeds from fresh strawberries or something.

How was your first week? Still mad at u for finally going back to teaching AFTER i leave.

Or...go ahead. Summer wasn't his boss, and maybe he might be pleasantly surprised. He just wouldn't likely find anything about the greatest television show in about a hundred different dimensions.

im pretty sure grampa rick has some bootleg files I could send you. not nearly the same as seeing it in theaters, but, you know, better than a fondler-less world entirely

There was a good five, ten minutes before Kanan texted back.

Granted, he'd probably gone and entered it in before she responded like a dingus.

But Summer was able to find a link from this dimension that might be way more helpful than Google in his current dimension and sent it his way.

It was hard for Summer not to laugh, and once she laughed, of course, Rick and Morty needed to know what was so funny, and since she wasn't clever enough to think of something on the spot, she just told them the truth, and now they were all laughing over their fly-sprinkled ice cream.

But she did have something to make up for it.

So, now that there'd been at least a small amount of trauma introduced into the interaction, Summer could get down to business.

Kanan took a few more moments to scroll through cute spiders, and then started typing out his reply.

The school's started doing summer camp activities on Wednesdays. Last week's was a rowboat race to Ingvar. I came in third to last because my partner had to teach me how to play rock-paper-scissors, and then insisted on the best two out of three before we even got into the boat. And it rained rainbow colors.

You know. As Fandom does.

Well, at least she wasn't missing anything too weird. Yet.

Truth be told, Kitty didn't actually have a taste for pancakes today. But she was driving herself crazy watching her phone for calls she knew weren't coming because her doctor wasn't open on Sundays, so she was getting out for a while.

"Is it me or does everything smell like pancakes?" she asked.

"See," Kanan called into the back, "people know!"

There was a muttered 'Sorry, Kitty,' from the kitchen, and Kanan gave a satisfied nod of his head before looking back at her.

"I think they were either having a food fight with very limited resources or they were trying to do some kind of extreme frisbee thing with them before I came in. I don't pretend to understand them."

Really, if it was the latter, Kitty might've participated, but helped clean up.

"I think you're missing a prime opportunity here to suggest pancake frisbee as a summer camp event," Kitty pointed out.

Kanan paused for a long moment at that.

"... I really need to run that one by Eliot," he noted, "But it sounds like an amazing, terrible idea."

They would absolutely get mobbed by seagulls.

It would be carnage.

"I'm here to help," she grinned. "Are there any pancakes left?"

"Available on request," Kanan replied, dutifully. "I'm not letting them stock up more ammunition today, but they've got the batter ready to go if anybody places an order. Looking for the Kitty today?"

"Sure. With blueberries." It was healthy. "I'm never going to be able to eat sugar again after this kid."

"Then again, you might need to in order to keep up," Kanan mused. "Not that I have much experience with kids, beyond the ones I grew up with."

And out of all of them, he'd been the handful.

"If it's Lexi-" Not that she was worried! "-she's pretty calm, but I also don't know what she was like when she was little. Luckily we're a big coffee household?"

Less so right now.

"So what you're saying is, gift you with all the coffee as a congratulatory gift once your little bundle of joy has arrived," Kanan surmised, sending Kitty's order to the kitchen. "I've heard things about toddlers being terrors, but again, everything I've got to work with there is pretty anecdotal."

"I've got decent experience with babies. Less so with toddlers," she admitted, making a face. "I'm sure you just kind of get used to it, right?"

"If not, they do at least stop being toddlers eventually," Kanan offered. Because it was his job to be Mr. Optimism today. Which was something he was terrible at, for the record. "So long as you survive it, it's just a matter of waiting it out."
