The Perk, Monday Late Morning/Afternoon

After his radio broadcast, Kanan had taken a bit of time to walk the dog and just kind of get his head into the right place before making his way down to the Perk. He had tentative coffee plans with Kaidan, who he'd left with plenty of questions since the last time they'd talked, and who he kind of wanted to check up on anyway. The guy had a good head on his shoulders, and Kanan wanted to make sure he was settling in well on the island, after all.

So, after dropping Stance off back home again, he headed into the Perk and ordered a peppermint tea.

The barista, who was far too used to him coming in and asking if they carried caf yet, kind of blinked at him for a moment before shrugging and filling a cup with hot water and tossing in a teabag. Kanan smiled, paid, thanked her, and went to find a seat by the window so he'd be easy to spot if Kaidan managed to make his way in.

And even if he didn't, hey, it was a nice enough day. People watching by the window while sipping at some tea seemed like a decent way to spend it all the same.

Rey had already heard radio before going out to get some things done, so when she spotted Kanan here, she decided to duck in. "Morning." Ish.

"Morning, Rey," Kanan replied, nodding a hello and raising his tea in greeting. "I hear you finally had your bit of portal luck, huh?"

He was happy for her!

And also he was going to miss her, dang it.

"Finally," she said, smiling a little. "Not until August, though. I half expect them to cancel it by then."

And she had mixed feelings!

"Well, if they cancel it, at least you know it can be set up. Come and get me and I'll yell at a gnome for you," Kanan offered. "It isn't likely to get anything accomplished, but it'd be satisfying."

"Thank you. I almost wouldn't mind seeing that anyway,," she grinned. "I didn't expect to wait this long, but at least I'll have time to prepare."

"There you go," Kanan chuckled. "Gives you time to pack, stock up on anything you might miss once you do back home. All that good stuff. Have you got any big plans for when you get back there?"

Rey actually looked blank for a second, because it was entirely possible she might never have plans again there. "Not really. I'll have to check in on some things, but that's all."

Well... that was a look. Kanan managed to bite back a wince, replacing it with a little nod of his head, instead. He was familiar with that look, yeah.

"Fair enough. If there's anything you need once you get there, don't hesitate to touch base. Hera and I do have access to some pretty decent markets back home, if nothing else."

"What kinds of markets?" she asked, finally taking a seat.

Seivarden placed her order as usual.

"And please don't touch it with your hands."

"We don't serve tea," the barista said, possibly trying to keep a straight face.

"What?!" Seivarden looked almost insulted.

The barista pointed at the menu, where the word 'tea' had been crossed out and replaced with 'hot leaf water'.

"You've got to be joking."

Kanan was not going to laugh. Kanan was not going to laugh. He was just going to sit there with his own tea, which he'd ordered as such, and not going to laugh.

"I didn't even have to put them up to that," he mused, leaning back in his seat.

Oh, his day had just gotten so much better.

"You're just trying to make fun of me, aren't you?" Seivarden snapped at the barista. She turned her head to look at Kanan.

"I'm guessing you put them up to this."

Kanan just continued to sit back with his tea hot leaf water, holding up one hand and looking not bothered at all.

"You know, I actually didn't," he noted. "I think they decided they don't like being verbally abused every day all on their own. I wouldn't want to steal their thunder, here."

"I'm sure your radio broadcast was a source of inspiration."

Seivarden shot a glare at the barista, who, regardless of whether Kanan was behind it or not, must have been in on it.

"I'm flattered you think I'm inspiring, Seivarden," Kanan chuckled. "You're really too kind."

He paused, and then his expression went a little more serious.

"Look, I've been meaning to call you on this one for a while, but do you think you could lay off the students, at least? I know you're hell-bent on being miserable and taking everybody down that hole with you, but most of the people who show up at the park on Fridays are kids. They don't deserve you mocking them on the air like you do."

Oh, Kanan was trying to be the good person here.

"I'm sorry if you have to deal with them breaking down crying because of my broadcasts," Seivarden said, looking annoyed rather than sorry. "Please send them my apologies."

That was because Kanan was a good person. Take notes, Seivarden.

"No, apologizing is your job. I'm just trying to fathom what sort of person takes that much satisfaction out of picking on kids who didn't do anything to deserve it. Because they hang out with me? Come on, that's sad."

As Kaidan walked to the Perk, he mused that in his not too distant path, trusting a large member of the Corvidae family to watch the till would have seemed a little strange, and now he referred to it as 'coffee break'. Sure, he would lose any shiny coins customers paid with, but the raven was getting adept at using the card reader and, so far, returning the proper amount of change from cash payments. Except the coins, but nobody had complained about that yet - and if they did, he'd encourage them to take it up with the bird.

As he pushed through the door, faint strains of ominous music and what sounded like an evil, cackling laugh followed him, instead of the normal pleasant chime of the bell. Kaidan frowned slightly, regarding the bell, then flexed his shoulders back for a moment to ease the sudden sense of foreboding.

Eyeing the menu, he chuckled, "Hot leaf water? Cute. Why isn't the coffee listed as 'hot seed water'?" The barista manning the register mumbled something about how that hadn't occurred to them. One of the other baristas threw Kaidan a grin and went to get the chalk. Not wanting to hold up the line, Kaidan put in his order and patiently waited while a giant mug full of caffeine, chocolate, caramel, and foam was delivered to him.

Carefully carrying the mug to Kanan's table, he took one of the empty seats and grinned, "Morning. I see you've achieved your cup of 'leaves in hot water'. How is it?"

"Minty," Kanan reported with a grin. "And maybe a bit too sugary. I might have overestimated just how much sugar it takes to make a good peppermint tea."

A smidgen. Because Kanan had a bit of a sweet tooth and absolutely no shame about it.

"How goes it, Kaidan? Survived the weekend, I see."

"So, legitimately just leaves in water," Kaidan teased, "Since that's a tisane and not a tea. Unless it's a green tea with mint?"

"Survived, no casualties," Kaidan noted, sipping his frothy girly drink cafe au diabetes, "Got a little exciting yesterday when one of the kids wanted to play some sort of duck hunting game. The bird took offense. Loudly. Since I make it a habit not to piss off creatures with talons and 3" knifelike beaks, I settled it by disabling the game. How was your weekend?"

"Just mint," Kanan mused, "I wouldn't know the difference between one hot drink that comes in a bag and another, around here. I'm more the 'ground roasted beans' kind of guy, usually, but I'm trying to cut back on my caffeine. Doctor's orders."

More or less, anyway.

"My weekend was quiet enough. The staff at the diner behaved itself, which is noteworthy only because I don't remember them ever behaving themselves. I'm not convinced they weren't plotting something, mind."

"They're seeds, you know, not actual beans," Kaidan grinned, getting his pedant on, "Beans boiled in water is soup. Generally doesn't come in a bag. Boxes, sometimes."

"Haven't yet been to the diner," Kaidan noted, "I heard someone talking about 'tomato water pearls' and just noped straight out of that. Sounds like it might be worth checking the video? I mean, if you have video. It seems like most stores around here have internal security video feeds."

"Beans, seeds, just so long as it's caffeinated, I'll take it. And as for the diner, usually on Sundays, it's pancakes," Kanan noted, looking faintly bemused. "I don't think anyone there has ever tried to give me a 'tomato water pearl.' The staff just gets into its strange moods from time to time, but you can always order something more to your taste if they do. And if that doesn't work out, someone'll kick their ass until real food happens."

They were helpful that way!

"That said, the security feeds are probably something else. Especially if there's anything set up in the freezer."

"I like my food to be predictable. Possibly a side effect of mess hall menus for so long," Kaidan said, taking another sip of his drink and then grimacing, setting it aside to cool a little, "Mostly I just cook for myself."

He hesitated to ask, but curiosity won out, "Do I want to know what you keep in the freezer?"

"Honestly, I do my own cooking, too. Considering I'm still getting used to the local ingredients, sometimes that ends up... with interesting results," Kanan admitted. "And the freezer really needs to be experienced. It's less about what we keep in there, and more about what's moved in. There's at least one bear and something with tentacles lurking around in it for sure."
