Community Center Class: Gourmet Foods Around the World

Hannibal greeted everybody as they showed up. "Today we will be visiting the trattoria La Brinca, in Liguria. That is a region in the northwest of the country of Italy on the continent Europe. The area is predominantly popular for its beaches and cuisine."

He led them through the portal to a comfortable-looking place with a lovely mountain view.

"This place is family-run, and predominantly known for their local foods and wines. They have tasting menus both of meat and of vegetarian meals - those will allow you to sample a number of foods. Their chestnut-flour fritter with wild fennel is excellent, and their rabbit and guinea fowl are both good and something you are less likely to find in the United States."

He led them into the room that was cozily small but well-appointed. "The local language is Italian; they are used to tourists and speak some English, but I am fluent in Italian as well, should you have any questions." He smiled to the member of the family waiting to lead them to a table.

Kanan listened, looked around, took in the ambiance...

Contemplated the rabbit. Hey, he wanted something he couldn't get as easily back in Fandom? That seemed the way to go.

"Well," Kanan drawled, looking around. "It's a restaurant that serves food, so I'm not seeing any drawbacks, here."

Kanan was easy to please, so sue him.

"Hell, it's even more comfortable in here than that... Fransh... France... the gold one. There's a win."

"French in France," Kanan echoed, and then repeated it a few more times under his breath to make it stick. Hopefully. "That one always trips me up. But," he gestured around, "I do like this. It's... nice. Like I could absolutely just settle in here for a few hours and enjoy the ambiance while ordering another dish now and again and chatting with old friends."

... He didn't have old friends, but the sentiment was there.

"I like it," Kanan decided. "Cantinas are sort of the same idea, but... dirtier, and less about food and more about drink. I haven't had many chances to sit in a place like this over the years."

And he was great at that!

"You know, I don't actually miss those cantinas all that much anyway. There's not exactly a shortage of those back home."

"What do I miss about home?" Well. There was a question with no easy answer, wasn't there? Kanan tilted his head for a moment, considering. "Always knowing that there's somewhere else to run to. Galactic travel. Droids that aren't Chopper. Being surrounded by people who aren't anything like me. I miss plenty."

"It's boring right up until it isn't," Kanan sighed, "which is pretty much anywhere I've ever been. But it's downright claustrophobic. Sometimes I take my ship up into orbit just to remember what it feels like to have breathing room. Even if space isn't so great for... uh... breathing."

Speaking from experience and everything.

"That is at least in part what attending this class is about," Kanan noted, shrugging. "It's a start, anyway. It makes the planet feel a little bit bigger."

"Yes and no," Kanan said, squinting one eye in thought. "It depends on the planet. To say anything otherwise would be selling a lot of the galaxy short. There are plenty of Core Worlds that are... or at least were... a whole mess of cultures tossed in wherever they could make a home for themselves. And even on different worlds, among the races who are native there, there are usually different beliefs and lifestyles. It gets simplified a lot when you're looking at it from a galactic point of view."

He gestured around them.

"Primitive world, not yet capable of reliable space flight, addicted to war and prone to the sort of greed that kills by the score. It's easy to simplify even your world at a glance. That doesn't mean it's a fair assessment."

"On the whole, this planet is a planet just like any other," Kanan agreed. "The sum of its parts, certainly. And not all of those parts necessarily make sense. That keeps things interesting all on its own. But it's still the galactic equivalent of a small town in the middle of literal nowhere."

"The thought has crossed my mind," Kanan admitted. "But Portalocity and I have developed some trust issues after it stranded me on the island for a year."
