Community Center Class: Gourmet Foods Around the World

Hannibal was dressed in a light linen suit today, without a tie. Practically casual for him.

"So far this term," he said to them, "We have been to nearly every continent upon this planet. North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Antarctica is almost exclusively researchers, and not known for its cuisine." Not that the idea of bringing something there wasn't tempting. "All that are left, therefore, are Australia and Africa. Today, we will be visiting Africa. It is a continent of many countries and even more cultures, but Ethiopia is known for its cuisine and its coffee, so I thought it would be a good place to experience."

He led them through the portal and to a large, sunny street, then to a restaurant. "Welcome to Yod Abyssinia. We are in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. There will be music and dancing to go with the meal. The official language is Amharic, but most here will speak at least some English, and there are English menus." Because for once he didn't speak the language.

"Ethiopian cuisine makes use of a wide variety of spices, so I encourage you to try small pieces of things before you eat large bites. Some are vegetarian, others will have a variety of meats. Ask if you are concerned and uncertain."

He nodded toward the large silver basins. "You will want to wash your hands. The plates are communal, and the only utensil you will have is injera, a sort of crepe. I will demonstrate the proper form for eating. Also, if you are interested, there is a coffee ceremony."

He smiled and bowed at the host, who led them to a table. "I hope you all enjoy."

It's a mix of traditional and touristy, though the food is pure local.

Kanan might have looked a little bit like somebody had tied him behind a party bus and dragged him down the street on the Fourth of July when he arrived. Sure, his clothing was fine, and he was just as clean as ever. Not even a hair out of place, but a first glance would probably scream 'hangover' today, and he found himself entirely too grateful that the food was something that wouldn't require too much in the way of coordination. Oh, and there was a big white bandage still stuck to his forehead, because like hell Kanan was going to leave the house without bacta, apparently.

Now he just had to not plant his face in it during the meal.

Hannibal raised an eyebrow at that, but luckily the bandage and lack of dishevelment led to the conclusion "wounded" rather than "formerly drunk".

"Are you well?" He clearly wasn't, but that was a good place to start.

"Been worse," Kanan replied, mostly because that was basically his default when it came to that question. A moment later, he followed it up with, "... Been better, too. It's nothing to worry about, though. It should clear up in a day or two."

Hopefully less, though, since he was supposed to sing karaoke at Summer's birthday party tomorrow.

"Have you suffered an injury?" Hannibal nodded at the bandage. "I was given to understand that your bacta worked quite rapidly."

"It tends to work better when it actually has immediate access to what's been injured," Kanan sighed. "I'm just working my way through the effects of some telepathic whiplash."

And he wasn't going to slap the bacta patch on his brain.

"Ah." Hannibal nodded. That, he was familiar with. "So, treat it as if for a migraine or concussion - not too much auditory or visual stimulation, plenty of rest, and don't do that again."

"Yeah, the first time wasn't exactly intentional," Kanan replied, shrugging and scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. "I intend to avoid being yelled at by very loud telepaths in the future."

Comparatively whispering back at them probably hadn't actually helped with the brain sprain, granted.

"Do you have methods of blocking them out or dampening the 'noise'," Hannibal asked.

"Sure," Kanan replied. "When I have a chance to brace myself for it. And at the end of the day, I'm still just one mind."

He paused, then added, "It was a hive mind. Many, many minds all pushing their voices into our heads at the same time. Great trial run for seeing if I can hold up against torture, maybe, but not recommended for telepathy resistance trials otherwise."

Hannibal nodded as he thought about that. "It sounds...unpleasant. It's good you escaped with a headache."

"And a nosebleed," Kanan agreed with a shrug. "And I'll be avoiding loud noises for a couple of days."

Well. Until Summer's party tomorrow, which he wasn't going to miss.

"Overall, it could've gone worse."

"It could have," Hannibal agreed. "You know that brain injuries can take quite some time to heal. You should be careful, take plenty of time to rest. Report to the clinic - or to me, if you prefer - if you suffer from undue dizziness or memory issues."

Kanan at least had the good grace to stop himself from making a comment about how there were times he'd absolutely welcome some memory issues. Low bar to stumble over, but there he was.

"Will do, Doctor," he replied, bowing his head a little. Because he sure as hell wasn't up for a nod just yet. "Never quite managed to get that kind of feedback before, so I'm not entirely certain what to expect, admittedly."

He got scolded half to death. It was a new one.

Hannibal chuckled. "You should expect frowns and exasperation if you ignore it," he said. "Unless the island should interfere, you have no reason not to relax for a time."

Kanan's smile went a touch wry.

"Well, I have a birthday party to go to tomorrow," Kanan noted, "that's relaxing, right?"

It was Summer's.

And he wasn't even mentioning the arrangement he had to meet Seivarden at the shooting range earlier in the day.

"That depends upon whose birthday it is," Hannibal said.

"Take some time to yourself, for yourself," he suggested. He cocked his head. "Did you know there is a spa in town? Or I can recommend some elsewhere - in Japan, perhaps, if you like it there. Take a day where others look after you, instead of the other way around."

"... That entire concept is baffling."

He was very bad at that thing. That thing right there that Hannibal had suggested.

Hannibal chuckled. "I can find a menu of services for you and explain them, if you like. I think you would enjoy it."

"I literally had my hair done in the scrapyard with a garden hose on Saturday," Kanan noted. "I don't think that's exactly my speed. But sure, a list."

He was never saying 'menu' in reference to a spa.

Hannibal might have looked a little pained at that. "They generally have hair services, along with manicures and pedicures, facials, massages, saunas and whirlpools, any number of things. I will find you one. It's extremely relaxing."

"Well, I guess I'll see," Kanan replied, shrugging his shoulders a little. "It seems like an experience, at the very least."

"It definitely is that," Hannibal agreed. "And as a doctor, I recommend it highly."

Oh no.

Seivarden immediately regretted coming along today, for obvious reasons. Communal plates, eating with pancakes? She hesitated, considering taking a portal back immediately.

"They don't make exceptions for visitors and offer private plates?" she asked, looking as calm as she could.

Space, but Seivarden's panic was beating Kanan's head in today. He'd already had an eventful day, and hadn't completely recovered from the Rachni's not-so-gentle conversation with him earlier.

Quietly, he pulled himself to his feet and left the table.

Five minutes later he came back and sat down. Where he'd found the pair of rubber gloves was anybody's best guess, but he'd replaced his usual fingerless gloves with them all the same, and was sitting down to prepare himself to eat now without comment.

Seivarden glanced at Kanan with a mix of relief, gratitude and confusion. She reached out to tear a piece of injera from an edge no one had touched yet.

"Issa is missing," she said, as if that was a good way to open up a conversation. She was worried, and had hoped this would distract her a little.

"Oh, hell," Kanan replied, frowning faintly. His hand stuttered to a stop halfway to the injera, and then he lowered it to the table. "Have you put food out for her? You take her out enough that she should be familiar with the outside, so she's not likely to go anywhere she can't find her way back from."

He could find her in about three minutes if they were back on the island and his head didn't feel like it had been run through with a lawnmower.

"The tables are not set up for more than one platter," Hannibal said. "If you'd like to eat at another table with your own plate, you are free to ask."

He'd been hoping to broaden your horizons, Seivarden.

"Or you could consider trying something new for the sake of stretching yourself."

Seivarden looked away, uncomfortable. She was going to sit at the table, but whether she'd be able to eat anything she wasn't sure.

She really needed to find someone else who could supply her with med. And stop going to these classes, possibly.

Because apparently the actual restaurant's site isn't loading, have a menu from the local place I have, then extrapolate. There will be a lot of sampler-type stuff on a big dish lined with injera, and more injera to eat with.

He plans on enjoying the coffee ceremony as well as the food.

And probably the reactions of certain students, because he's a troll.

Dang it, now I want Ethiopian. And they're closed on Mondays.
