Community Center Class: Eat your Heart Out!

"Good evening," Hannibal said when everybody had arrived. "I hope you enjoyed last week's food. What have you got for me this week?"

If it was more edible underwear, Reno, Hannibal was going to sigh at you.

When Reno came in today, he was tossing a vegetable up in the air and catching it again. The thing looked vaguely like a segmented tomato, and even though he was appearing kind of flip with the thing, there was some care in the way he caught it before throwing it back up again.

For good reason. That damn green had cost him 5,000 Gil. You could buy a gun for less than that kind of money. And anybody who ate any food prepared with it was going to end up with a little extra pep in their step today. It did have healing properties, after all.

Look, Reno could only bring in edible underwear so many times. He was curious how Lecter handled this one.

Hannibal looked intrigued, turning the thing over in his hands and pressing lightly at it. "Tell me about this," he prompted. "What is it?"

"Silkis green," Reno explained. "That's the high-end shit right there, yo. Little on the bitter side, I hear, but I ain't ever bitten into one before. Has healing properties, so if anyone's bleedin' out or whatever, you can shove that into their mouth to stabilize 'em if you ain't got anything better."

He paused and added, "Mostly, they're prized for chocobo breeding, though."

He shrugged. It was all fine and good if you wanted a gold-plated riding chicken who could fly, he supposed. He liked buying vegetables for more practical things, like making the food teacher wonder what the fuck to do with the weird alien fruit.

"Are there any restrictions to preparing it?" Hannibal asked. "Any part that is toxic or unpalatable?"

Reno shrugged and shook his head.

"Nah," he replied. "People just bite into 'em raw when they need a pick-me-up, yo. Should be fine."

Hernando arrived to class late and looked a little abashed about it. "My apologies. The store wouldn't let me out. I had planned to bring some rhubarb but the counter ate it and insisted I bring this instead."

He handed over a small bag of glutinous black rice.

Hannibal nodded. "Apology accepted. And ingredient much appreciated." He smiled at the rice, already working out what he could do with it.

Or feed it to someone else. You do you.

Hannibal tried the silkis green, noticed its faint bitterness, and decided to treat it like eggplant. He salted it and let it sit while he worked on the rice.

Then he set about making silkis green with garlic sauce and sticky rice, adding jicama and red pepper for contrasting colors with the black and green.

"Bon appetit."
