It was the first week with the new people, so Kitty was trying to make a good impression at the bar.

She had also put a kibash on the country music, and it was disturbing, but this may be what zombies looked like when they sulked.

One still wore a cowboy hat, though.

"Well, that's... uh." Fjord was rarely at a loss for words, but as he found a seat at the bar and cast a side-eye at the band, he found that in this particular case, he absolutely was. "Different."

There was indeed a word.

"Evenin'," he greeted, looking back at the bartender with a pleasant (if still a little unsettled by the zombies) smile. "I don't suppose you'd mind me asking if this is an establishment that serves food and drink, or if I've found a place better suited to more thoroughly slaking my thirst instead?"

That was a very roundabout way of asking if this bar had a kitchen, yes. But many of the inns and taverns back home had a bit of both, so it didn't hurt to check.

"Mostly drink, but we do have a little bit of a kitchen," Kitty said, glancing at Tino, who would be the cook. "Iiiii might recommend ordering a pizza to the bar."

Fjord followed that gaze, considered for a moment, and then decided he'd just go with that suggestion, instead.

"Afraid I don't know what that is," he admitted, "but if you explain it to me, I'll order enough to go around."

He had... probably enough for a pizza. A couple of silver coins had converted well enough into weird paper money that he'd be able to eat, at least, until his first payday.

"It's dough covered with sauce and cheese and toppings, and Tino's got this one," she said. "He's still paying off breaking a whole lotta glassware last week."

"Tino would be the, uh," Fjord glanced back toward the man in question again, and then back to Kitty. "The reason it'd be better to just order pizza, then?"

"Yes," she said seriously. "And there go all my good first impressions, hi, I'm Kitty."

Fjord grinned at that, and then shook his head.

"Tried to teach my class about the importance of first impressions yesterday, mostly I think I just made my co-teacher irritated at me." But the students had enjoyed the trick, so he was calling it even. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Kitty. I'm Fjord."

"Good to meet you. And see, you made a good first impression there, just maybe not to everyone," she rationalizedz

"I figure anything that annoys one of the instructors is probably just about their speed," Fjord agreed, amused. "It's just a matter of understanding teenagers, I guess."

Or at least realizing that most of them were sadistic and hated authority.

"And you immediately become their favorite," she added. "Have you worked with kids a lot?"

Fjord gave a little huff of a laugh at that, and shook his head.

"There have been a few cabin boys over the years, on merchant ships I've worked on," he replied. "Other than that... no. Not really."

His experience with kids was minimal at best, and his approach to teens was mostly, 'like with adults, but with lower expectations.'

"So what brings you here, then?" she asked.

"What about people who are new to teaching?" Rosa tried, although, if she was honest, she was pretty confident that she wouldn't have to push too hard to get a discount out of Kitty. By now, her dedication to drinking on Tuesday was probably already putting that baby of hers through college.

"I could be convinced." Because, like, Rosa had a spot here. "What can I get you?"

"The tides, I suppose," Fjord sighed. "Washed up on the beach a few days back, in time for the picnic. Which, seeing as I'd been traveling through the mountains the night before, is one hell of an accomplishment." He spread his hands a little. "Next thing I know, I'm teaching a class about friendship with a skittish little holy man."

"That happens sometimes," she frowned. "But it seems like most of the time people end up getting home with no problem after a while."

"There's not much back there I'm in any particular hurry to get back to," Fjord mused with a shrug of his shoulders. "I had some tentative plans that were interrupted. I'm willing to entertain whatever this whim is until it makes sense or until I get to leave, whichever comes first."

He paused, and then smiled wryly.

"I suppose I ought to order something besides... that food you'd mentioned, huh?"

"That'd probably help," she said. "What're you in the mood for?"

"I'm afraid I'm not terribly familiar with the local brews," he noted. "Have you got any decent ale?"

There was a pause, and then he amended, "Affordable, satisfactory ale."

"I'm not the biggest ale person-" Especially now."-so my idea of satisfactory might be different, but I can let you try a couple."
