Luke's, Sunday

[uncertain_dume]

Kanan walked into Luke's and was very nearly bowled over by what he could only describe as a hovering monstrosity composed of noodles and meatballs. It pulled up short just before it could run into him, reared back a little, and then just... kind of reached a noodle out and patted him on the shoulder before flying out the door and ascending up, up, up, out of sight, into the heavens.

He stared after it for a minute, and then looked back into the store, where the staff was staring at him, mouths agape.

"What?"

As Kanan settled in for his shift and chased the staff back to their respective jobs, he could have sworn he'd heard the busboy whisper, "He's been touched by His Noodly Appendage."

... Sure.

"Oh, I know," she said. "But I also don't want to get anyone else in trouble, either. Just want to make sure everything's clear."

"Everything's clear," Kanan replied, holding up the hand that wasn't holding his Coke. "I'm still liable to be a little wary, but..." He shrugged. "I figure I grew up on enough stories of what the Jedi filtered the Sith down into over a thousand years, it'll be hard to shake."

He sipped at his drink, and then added, "But she didn't attack me outright when she found out, so that's good."

Especially since he'd made a point to leave his lightsaber unassembled.

"She seems reasonable. Will talk about lightning- can you do lightning?- and then be careful about it," Sabine said. "It's not so much a red flag as a bright pink one."

"I... can't do lightning, no," Kanan said, looking at his hand for a moment. And then shaking his head. "If I do lightning, something's gone terribly wrong."

She nodded.

"I don't know much about this," she said. "I feel a little like I'm about to get an education in all of it."

To be fair, that was likely to be her whole semester, on a few subjects.

"Honestly," Kanan noted, "when it comes to Sith, I think I'm going to get a bit of one, too."

For better or worse, he supposed.

"Okay, it sounds foreboding when you say it," Sabine decided. Had to be a Jedi thing.

Was probably a Jedi thing.

Or an 'anybody who had ever met a Sith besides Lana' thing.

"Even in our time, Jedi encounters with Sith tended to end... badly," Kanan explained. "I've never met one myself, but some Jedi have. It's hard to believe that Lana is from the same... order?"

Was there a collective noun for Sith? A disaster of Sith, maybe? A slaughter? A regret?

"What are they like in our time?" she wondered.

After all, it wasn't like the Sith in the Empire were slumming it with cadets.

"Rare," Kanan offered. "We became aware they weren't actually extinct when one killed a Jedi Master." Still a little before Kanan's own time. Caleb Dume had only been a year old when Master Qui-Gon Jinn was killed. "Dangerous, though. Lethal. Cunning. Ruthless."

Like lightning being the first destructive thing they learned. Which, Sabine figured was sort of fine. She didn't really let her guard down around people anyway, just keep more of an eye out in this instance.

"You know, when I first came here, I didn't see any of this ever coming up."

Kanan shook his head.

"Yeah, funny thing about this place," he noted, "neither did I."

"First Mandalorians, now Sith," she said teasingly. "Just imagine next semester."

[uncertain_dume]

"Next semester, it's either going to be Hutts or gundarks, and either way, I'm out of here," Kanan decided.

At least he decided it with a grin.

"And you'd better take me with you, because I am not having this same conversation about a Hutt."

She said it lightly, but there were definitely people she didn't want to see showing up here.

"Deal," Kanan replied. "No friendly Hutt conversations. Honestly. I'd rather deal with the gundark."

"I wouldn't go that far. It'd just ruin the welcome picnic," she pointed out.

[uncertain_dume]

"Hey, the new kids will have to deal with something like it eventually anyway," Kanan pointed out, waving a hand around illustratively. "Better if they show up knowing what they're in for."

"I don't know about that. I'm pretty sure no one actually believes me about the fish. They'd probably think this was a trick to haze them," she pointed out.

"You figure they wouldn't believe an actual gundark?"

...

"Okay, that's fair. Nobody does denial quite the same way folks who end up here seem to."

"I turned into a bird literally in front of my roommate and she thought I just went somewhere else."

The denial was strong with that one.

"... Going above and beyond the call to believe that everything here is normal, huh?"

That was impressive.

"I think she's gotten better?"

She had not.

"How much better?"

Kanan was concerned.

Sabine opened her mouth to give an example, and then stopped.

"She's probably just not being vocal about it."
