Community Center Class: 21st Century Social Media, Thursday Evening [09/13].

"Okay!" said Summer, once it was time for the class to begin and after giving it a few moments for any stragglers to get in. ...okay, no, she had been in the middle of making a vitriolic comment on a YouTube video about how redheads shouldn't wear pink and they clearly had no idea what they were talking about, but whatever, and the comment was posted so it was time to get to work. "So. Those of you who are already familiar and have access to email more than likely got an invitation to their Fandom address about a birthday party happening in the park pretty much as we speak, so we're going to have a short class today, as I think it's an excellent opportunity for us to all go out and explore the social part of this class title first hand.

"If you're not familiar with email, then this is clearly an example of why email is important, especially in the social realm, because, without it, you can miss out on important things, like business opportunities, catching up with people you haven't talked to in ages, and, of course, party invitations. And the great thing about early 21st century technology is that you can get your emails right on your phone! Like, who even emails from a computer anymore, anyway?

"Stick around for just a little bit if you're interested, and we'll make sure you're all set up to receive and respond to emails on your phone before you leave. Other than that, I want to take this opportunity to teach you all about live-tweeting, especially since we just covered Twitter last week. Live-tweeting is a popular early 21st century phenomena where an individual expresses their thoughts and opinions on an event in real time while it's happening. It's particularly popular with watching television shows, concerts, or sporting events. Some people make the argument that the prevalence of live-tweeting in our current culture distracts from the actual experience of an event, while others would counter with the fact that it enhances the experience, as you are sharing that experience with a multitude of people, who can respond and enhance what you're getting out of it.

"I say, whatever floats your boat. I'm a big fan, though, and, because of that, I'm planning on live-tweeting the party tonight, and I encourage you all to follow along with the hashtag 'HappyBDayZack!'. Again, I'll show you how to do that if you're not sure, and I also encourage those of you who set yourself up on Twitter to do the same. Just tag all your tweets with #HappyBDayZack!, and anyone who clicks that tag will see what we've all been saying about the party. I encourage you to comment back if something particularly catches you and build on interactions with other people through the social media while also building on the interactions with people IRL. That means 'in real life.' A true connoisseur of early 21st century technology can find that perfect balance between the world around them and the world of cyberspace.

"Don't feel you have to do any of this, either, of course, it's not like you're going to be graded on it or anything. But if you're not ready to dive into live-tweeting, I do have a little sort-of assignment for you. If you've set up a Twitter, try to find at least two other people at the party and add them to your Twitter friends. If you're not going to do the Twitter thing, try to find at least two other people to at least add to your friends or contacts for texting. Social media isn't jack crap without the social part, and it's a good opportunity to really expand your circles.

"But, at the very least, at least at some point before next class, check out the #HappyBDayZack! hashtag and see what others said or posted, and maybe we'll chat about it next week.

"So, any questions? Hit me up, we'll get it all straightened out, and then let's get out of here! There's a party to get to!"

Kanan reached a hand up to scratch his chin while he thought.

... Was it acceptable to bring a dog to a birthday party? He probably wasn't going to be doing any live tweeting to Stance's account otherwise.

Amaya was pretty sure that this morning had more than filled her Summer-quota for the day, so she considered just skipping out on the class today. But she still found the information strangely interesting and maybe even one day useful, plus she had most of the day to recover, so there was way, ready to learn even more about the weird, weird ways people used these little tiny boxes.

She was a bit skeptical about the live-tweeting thing. Oh, she'd definitely be curious what people posted if they did decide to go through with it, but she didn't think she herself would, unless she wanted to spend the whole time either constantly removing her gloves to type or just go entirely without them, but that would be...just weird.

Well... Fjord was here, with his phjone, and was managing mostly to follow along with the lecture this week.

He wasn't sure if he ought to be worried about that or not.

"... E-mail."

What did the E mean?

Fjord stared at his phone for a few moments.

"... That would be a question," he decided. Possibly against his better judgment. "I'm pretty sure that was a question."

"Not exactly, no," Fjord confirmed. "I've heard tell of it, mostly in passing, but the gentleman who mentioned it to me didn't see much need for it, either."

Why write a message when you could just make a call?

"Aaah..." Fjord looked faintly bewildered, but he nodded all the same. "Sure?"

Wait, a little more certain there, big guy.

"Sure. Let's wrangle this thing and get it set up on that phone."
