Another day at work. Atton was beginning to get the hang of it again.

To keep himself busy, he'd picked up a bunch of bottles and a book of cocktails. He was meticulously making his way through several as he went along, testing them out on Tino when they were done.

Sometimes labor for the hands drowned out what was going on in your head. And if anyone was an expert at accomplishing that, it was Atton Rand.

Fjord had been able to direct him to Caritas. It was Sunday. He knew of at least one person he would recognize there.

Testing out the new clothes he'd bought that morning, Fenris valiantly kept his expression casual and confident even though the new clothing felt strange and he felt a little naked without armor. Jeans and a simple gray long-sleeved cotton t-shirt.

Still no shoes though. They'd felt too weird on his feet.

"Atton," he greeted quietly, taking a seat at the bar. He looked over the bottles curiously. "What are you making?"

Octavia side-eyed the hell out of the cocktails when she arrived. But then she'd been side-eyeing almost everything in this place since she'd walked in, so that didn't really say much.

"Beer, thanks."

Look at her having some manners, though. Almost.

"Something really weird I found on a cocktail website this morning," Atton said. "The Eucalyptus... something?"

A beat.

"I never knew you could actually drink that."

"The crappy American kind or the slightly less crappy Canadian kind?" Atton checked.

"The less crappy Canadian kind, obviously," said Octavia, who until a few seconds ago had not been aware there was any difference.

She also had no idea where the beer Bellamy bought from the.store was originally from.

Atton shrugged, slapped a bottle on the table. "You could've also asked for a microbrew."

Octavia's brows dipped into a confused frown. "A micro what?"

If she looked like a woman expecting to get acquainted with yet another piece of frivolous present-day nonsense... Well, yeah.

"Tiny breweries make small batches of pretentious beer that's actually pretty good," Atton said. "And then we call what they make microbrews."

"Is it something you drink yourself or something you serve to someone you don't like?" Fenris asked, mildly curious, "We have things like that where I'm from."

After a moment. "Poisons, mostly."

Sunday called for a beer. Maybe more than one. He went inside and took a seat near Fenris, the only familiar face in the bar.

Hailing the bartender, "Do you have Tecate, bottled, please?"

"Fenris," Hernando greeted him, "How have your first few days been?"

"Well," Octavia said, after a gulp of her non-microbrew, "that's not the dumbest thing I've heard recently."

Actually it made more sense to her than mass production did. At least in the sense that a tiny brewery would've been the most they could have had on the Ark or the ground.

"Hernando," Fenris greeted him in return. "They've been well. Confusing, but well. How have your last few days been?"

"Confusing, but well," Hernando echoed back at him with a small smile, "It was time for a beer."

[mages_suck]

"It is always a good time for a beer," Fenris agreed.

Then he paused and carefully corrected, "For a good beer. Not the kind in the..cans."

Coors.

He could still remember the taste. It caused his mouth to twist in a tiny grimace. Never doing that again.

"Did you just sneeze, or did you actually ask me for a drink I've never heard of before?" Atton asked, glancing over to the new guy.

"It's something I'm making so I can figure out if it's any good," Atton said idly. "Tino gets to taste test, so I'm safe either way."

Hernando shared the grimace and offered the sage advice, "Bottled beer is usually always superior to any kind in a can."

He was a snob about his beer. Not quite as much as with tea.

Atton shrugged. "They make good beer, which is the most annoying part of the equation," he said. "If you're going to be pretentious, at least be bad."

[hernando_fuentes]

His face fell slightly. "It is a beer from Mexico. Sometimes it is available in the States. No matter. What would you recommend for a good Pilsner?"

Fenris flicked a glance at Tino, "Good plan. So, you mentioned finding a drink that did not taste of cat piss, when last we spoke?"

He was admittedly curious about the new one Atton was mixing.

Not curious enough to try it first, mind.

"I will take note," Fenris said dryly. "My roommate has switched to hard spirits in despair, I think."

"I mean, there's Molson or Warsteiner if you want it generic but less crappy than the American kind, or there's Stillwater Mono if you like them local and pretentious," Atton said, eyeballing the beer fridge.

[hernando_fuentes]

"Between those and terrible beer, better the spirits," Hernando agreed. He glanced over Fenris' new duds. "You have been shopping? Was this at Sparkle's store?"

It looked it. For jeans and a shirt, it was very well put together.

Shoes, Fenris. You need some shoes.

"Sure," Atton said easily. "What do you usually drink?"
