That One Warehouse, Friday Afternoon

Today was a warehouse day for no reason in particular, really. Certainly no reason related in any way to the increasing occurence of clone trooper gear in Kanan's dreams, of blaster fire when he closed his eyes even in the middle of the day. That was totally normal. He lived on an island full of clone troopers, which he managed to ignore with... some doing... and it just stood to reason that now and again that old fear would flare up if maybe he caught sight of one from the corner of his eye, or had to pass by the station in order to get somewhere in a hurry.

He wasn't thinking about the stone.

Also, shut up.

His one concession to attempting not to be a paranoid wreck today was that he was going to prop the warehouse door open while he ran through lightsaber forms. See? He wasn't hiding from anything, nobody could prove a thing, and also, no really, shut up.

On the plus side, here was a Rey call! She was very serious about her check-ins.

And Kanan appreciated that Rey was very serious about her check-ins. It was one less thing for him to be worried about on top of absolutely nothing he was fine.

The sound of his lightsaber being shut off was probably audible before he even got the phone to his mouth to say, "Hey, Rey."

Because Kanan was a multitasker. And because dammit, he needed these Friday check-ins.

"Hi," she greeted him. "Am I interrupting?"

Evergreen question.

"Nothing I can't do after we're done talking," Kanan replied, grinning a little. He'd worry if she didn't ask, at this point. "I'm mostly just going through the motions today. Everything's a distraction. How goes it?"

"Fine. Boring." It'd been a bad week, and rationing was harder to deal with when you weren't as used to it anymore. But she wasn't going to say that. "Does this mean I shouldn't ask what's going on?"

"You're welcome to ask," Kanan replied. "I'm just not sure if I have all the answers. Hera and I took our class to read to kids at a library on the mainland? That was nice."

In that there were no clone troopers on the mainland. A definite bonus.

"I wore a stupid hat for the occasion."

He'd looked... like a cowboy who hadn't cared enough to actually try looking like a cowboy. Maybe like he was a tourist dressing up for the Calgary Stampede or something.

Rey tilted her head, even if he couldn't see it. "Why did you wear a stupid hat?"

Maybe it was Stupid Hat Day at the library.

"Camouflage," Kanan sighed. "We've decided instead of making all the non-human people in our class look human, we'd just pass everyone off as being in costume. October's apparently a good month for it, anyway."

"Right, that Halloween thing," she remembered. It wasn't like she'd ever participated. "Did it work?"

"Pretty sure my TA was judging me," Kanan noted, "but the kids all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of costumed weirdos. I'm going to consider it a success."

And maybe make sure there were costumes provided for those students who would've just been wearing t-shirts and looking baseline human otherwise.

"Good. And it gives people a chance to get off the island for a while."

...How's that self-imposed exile going, Rey?

"The change of scenery probably doesn't hurt," Kanan agreed. "I'll admit I was tempted to spend a little extra time in the library after class."

Mostly just because he was getting anxious about whatever it was the island was about to unload on them, yes.

"At least you can always go back," she pointed out. Because she didn't know the island was doing a thing.

"True enough," Kanan agreed. Because Kanan was in denial about it. "And fall break is this coming week, even if I don't end up going on the school trip I can always spend time back home getting into trouble there."

"Why wouldn't you go on the trip?" She loved the trips. So much.

[uncertain_dume]

"Whether I go depends on how I'm feeling after this weekend and if there's work that needs to be done," Kanan replied. "The trips are fine, but if I can be making myself useful taking potshots at Stormtroopers without having to worry about making it back in time for classes and such, that's where I'd rather be."

"All right, that does make sense," she conceded. "That probably is a better use of your time."

Even if you didn't get to see new Earth things that way.

"That's me," Kanan replied. "Nothing if not responsible."

... What a load of bantha poodoo.

"I didn't go as far as to say that," she teased. "This time."

[uncertain_dume]

"Well, good," Kanan chuckled. "It's way weirder when other people say it."

Because Kanan knew he was totally full of it. Other people tended to say stuff like that in all seriousness. Broke his head a little.

"Yes, I've learned," she said lightly. "It's honestly a little weird to hear you say it."

"I say it entirely tongue-in-cheek," Kanan reported. "If that helps any."

"I'm deciding," she said, considering it. "Is the trip anywhere good, at least?"

The real problem with Rey's time there was that she couldn't always properly live vicariously through others.

"Greece," Kanan offered. "Which means next to nothing to me, except that it doesn't have the most appealing sounding name."

But it was spelled differently, which presumably helped?

"I'll have to look it up," she decided. To torture herself, apparently.
