The Silence sat on the floor in the middle of the shop when Breq arrived. She looked at it, then walked past, made herself some tea while humming a song she had just learnt, and sat down behind the counter.

She kept humming, and although no one could hear it, the songs were still playing to her in her head. Memory, Breq was reminded, was something the Silence couldn't control.
