The Streets of Fandom, Monday Afternoon

Vette was a girl on a mission today. Just as soon as she'd realized that a bunch of creepy non-droids were popping up around the island, sticking around just long enough to make people feel uneasy, and then disappearing again, she'd gone and grabbed her tools and a bag and set out in search of the things. It just so happened, she'd learned after a bit of experimentation, that she couldn't just take a whole machine without it disappearing along with the rest of the display, but cracking them open quickly enough and picking out mechanical parts here and there meant that, while the display vanished, the pieces would remain.

And it wasn't stealing if they didn't belong to anybody and they wouldn't exist again in a few minutes anyway, right? That was called scavenging, and it was practically a career path in its own right back home.

She grinned as she detached the lower jaw from a singing puppy dog and inspected it carefully before stuffing it into her bag.

Oh yes. She had plans for these things.
