Kanan's Warehouse, Friday Morning/Afternoon

Still with no real clue about what to do with himself on Friday mornings around this place without a class, Kanan had made his way to the warehouse early again. All the better for pulling out his holocron and meditating on it, watching the recording of Skywalker going over modifications he'd made to the Ataru form back during the war. He only really used Ataru when pitting lightsaber against blaster fire, but the refresher was good, and anything Kanan could use to get an edge, even if he never wound up igniting his lightsaber back home, he was going to take.

Keeping your saber moving is the key to deflecting the fire of multiple adversaries...

Kanan hoped it would never come to that.

He had seen enough to know that, now that he had fully committed himself to Hera's cause, it eventually would. And so he had his lightsaber out and was following along.

Practice these exercises mindfully, and you'll see improvement, I promise.

"Yeah," Kanan sighed, "that's the hope, isn't it?"

And here was the weekly call! Again from the ship, which she guaarded a little more closely now.

And as usual, Kanan was shutting off his lightsaber and answering with a pleasant, "Hey, Rey!"

Because he did look forward to these calls, okay?

"How goes things?"

He also continued to worry.

"All right so far," she said slowly, since she wasn't sure how long that would be true and was shocked it had been true this long. "How are you?"

Hm. So far.

Kanan frowned a little, but didn't let it show in his voice when he replied.

"Can't complain at the moment. Brushing up on lightsaber techniques I haven't dusted off much since the war."

"So nothing I've seen yet?" she asked, immediately interested.

[uncertain_dume]

"Not unless you've seen me working with the remotes," Kanan replied. "In which case, you have, but badly."

... Not badly, Kanan. Just not Master Solo good, either.

"I don't think I have. Do you have to practice differently with remotes?"

Jack showed up Friday morning carrying a plastic bag of popcorn and a six pack of Coke in plastic bottles. She sauntered on in and strolled her way to a crate, clambering up and plopping her ass down to watch Kanan.

"See you've got the shiny zoom-zoom sword out today," she noted cheerfully, "One of the students said she'd help me get the parts to build one."

"Shiny zoom-zoom sword," Kanan echoed, amused as he glanced Jack's way. "Yeah, I suppose I do."

He paused a moment.

"... One of the students did?"

Oh no.

"That student wouldn't happen to be Lana, would it?"

She was the only one he was aware of who used a lightsaber these days.

"Instead of the dull metal or boring-ass wooden swords," Jack supplied helpfully.

Tossed a few kernels of popcorn into her mouth and crunched while nodding. "Yup. No idea how well it'll work for me but guess we'll find out."

Jack was entirely too cheerful about this for it to be a good idea of any kind.

"Well, that'll be..."

Kanan actually lowered his lightsaber, turning to look at Jack thoughtfully.

....

"That'll be interesting."

Terrifying. It would be terrifying.

Jack threw a kernel of popcorn at him. "What are you, Canadian? 'Interesting' is not an all-around adjective."

HE WAS CANADIAN BY PROXY, JACK.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious as to how that would work out," he tried instead, snatching the popcorn out of the air.

And eating it. Mmm.

"I suppose Lana would have access to lightsaber parts, at that."

Later in the afternoon, when he was done with his errands, Kaidan went to the warehouse. He blinked a little, watching the holo and watching Kanan watch the holo. "Is that who I think it is?"

"That," Kanan agreed, "is exactly who you think it is."

He cast a glance sidelong at Kaidan.

"Whatever else I think about the guy, Skywalker was one of the most skilled warriors in the Order during the war."

[spectre_alenko]

Kaidan nodded. He could accept that. "What style's he doing?"

Then he blinked a moment. "Wait.. the same war?"

"This is Ataru," Kanan replied. "And yes, the same war. Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight and hero of the Clone Wars."

He blew out a little breath.

"He was damn good. Probably still is, I mean. But..." He waved a hand around. "You know what I mean."

"Haven't seen you use those moves before when you've practiced it," Kaidan said. It wasn't often.

"But he's a dick," Kaidan finished for him, because he knew there was no way Kanan was going to put 'Jedi Knight' in the same line as 'completely unrepentant sleemo dickhead'.

"They're specific to blaster fire," Kanan replied. "I have terrible luck with remotes."

He... really needed to repair that last one.

"... And yeah. 'But he's a dick.'"

They didn't even know how bad it really was.

Lana stopped by later in the afternoon, and paused when she saw what he was doing. She came in quietly, watching...was that the dean?

"Little known fact around here," Kanan said, slipping into another round of the same pattern, not so much as glancing Lana's way, yet. "Skywalker is possibly the most adept lightsaber user on the island. I'd be willing to bet he gives Rand a run for his money even on a good day, but I've never actually seen him at work with one."

... pivot, four, five...

"This was recorded a while ago, mind."

A good reason not to antagonize him, then.

"He doesn't look that much older now." Lana paused. "Is this one of those Fandom oddities?"

She lit her own saber and mirrored him in the movements. Ataru wasn't one of her favorites; she could probably use the practice.

"I haven't quite figured that one out," Kanan replied. "I figure it's easier to just go with yes; I haven't entirely managed to figure out the Skywalker family tree yet, but if ever I do, I'll let you know."

A pause, and then he added, "I've met his grandkids."

"That must be so odd," Lana said, shaking her head. She stepped into the next movement. "I'm in his class too, this semester. We haven't learned much yet, but it's early days."

"That's right, too. You're on... what, week two? Barely enough time to make introductions, yet."

And pivot...

"Which class is it he's teaching this semester?"
