It was a little amazing, how much difference a week could make. Astrid had felt so heavy, so downtrodden, so miserable on Tuesday, but her mood had improved significantly sense. Maybe it was the lack of drudging classes she had to get through on Mondays, maybe it was the fact that she'd finally broken past her artists' block and now the wall on her side of the room was redone with a colorful collage of spinning plastic pinwheels that one couldn't help but look at and feel a little bit happier, maybe it was just getting to actually create something again, in the company of Sabine, while she did the same thing, their quiet, simple companionship reminding her that there would be at least one thing she'd miss if she'd stayed in California. None of the kids at the home she was staying at even came close to being as cool of a roommate.

So, even though it was very clear that Apu was playing favorites in not thinking Astrid deserved a trophy like Jughead (which, really, she was okay with), Astrid was in a good mood, finishing up some sign work that Summer had left for her before pouring some of that good mood into a letter to her mother, festooned with little sketches and drawings of some of the things she wrote about, and then settled in with a book to try to get through in between customers.
