Astrid had barely made it to the counter to start her day at the store before Apu, dressed in a ridiculously poufy red clown wig, was shoving another absurdly large wig in blue Astrid's way, a wig she just took with no intention of actually wearing, and turned her questioning look toward her coworker.
"Do I even want to know?" she asked.
"It's National Big Wig Day," he explained.
And Astrid shook her head. "You have to be making half of these up," she insistted, looking ruefully down at the wig in her hand, and noticing now that he'd put one on the Squishy machine, too. "There's no way that's a thing."
"It is a new one," Apu allowed, "first observed only last year! But that's why it's so important to keep celebrating it!"
"Well, you go right ahead," said Astrid. "I think I'll pass."
She'd happily cite religious differences as a reason if she had to, but Apu just sighed, shook his head, gave her a look that made it clear why she wasn't receiving any trophies for made up awards like some other employees, and went back to his business. And Astrid just shook her head slightly again, set the wig on top of the cloche where Summer put her jello monstrosities, and went back to hers.
