Turtle & Canary; Friday [03/01].
In general, Astrid tended to mostly just come into work, get what needed to be done done, maybe be pleasant and polite to customers, and sort of ignore whatever it was Apu was doing, as long as it wasn't something that directly related to her. She'd help with displays and stuff, sure, because she actually liked doing that, but sometimes she just tried to give him a wide space, because there was likely some weird holiday he was celebrating that would just be confusing or extra work.
But today it was kind of hard to avoid, as he kept giving hopeful looks toward the door or the back room or the Squishy machine or even curious glances at Astrid herself behind the register, and it was really started to pick at the more curious parts of her brain. So, despite feeling like she'd probably regret it, she went ahead and asked Apu what was on his mind.
And listened, carefully, consideringly, politely, and gave him a sympathic look, almost went over to pat him consoling on his shoulder.
"No, Apu, I'm sorry," she said. "I really don't think Summer's got anything particular planned for Employee Appreciation Day. Or National Salesperson Day."
Because she was pretty sure those were just more fake holidays he was completely making up.
She did buy him a cupcake to make him feel better as a gesture of coworker appreciation, but she only received a withering look and a "That is not a real thing."
Yeah, well, screw you, too, Apu. Geez.
