Caritas, Friday Evening

There were random cheeseburgers at Caritas today. Tino didn't seem to have an explanation for them, which Fjord was learning was more or less typical of random food around this place. They just... seemed to appear, on a little plate with a neatly folded napkin on it, beside any glass, empty or full, every time somebody put one down on the bar.

Tino, naturally, had taken a few minutes to just pick a glass up and set it down a few times just for giggles.

Fjord rolled his eyes. Really, if that was all it took to make them appear, they'd be up to their knees in the damn things before happy hour was through. But at least he'd have plenty of food to bring home tonight, he supposed.

And, since it was a perfectly normal Friday, cheeseburgers notwithstanding, Amaya was in for her usual rounds of end-of-the-week ale.

"'Evening, Fjord. How's the day been?"

"So far, so good," Fjord replied, smiling as he started readying her drink. Really, at this point they had a system, here. She brought him coffee on Wednesdays, he served her ale on Fridays, life was great. "Today's been mostly quiet," which, meh, "but the island's making sure nobody's drinking on an empty stomach tonight, so it balances out."

Well, Amaya could point out that the one flaw in that system was the fact that it all came out of her pocket, but since her pockets ran pretty deep these days, all things considered, she wouldn't.

"Oh, I like those days," Amaya said, and not just because she could use the potential for free food as a defense against sometimes working so hard she forgot about little things like eating. "What's on the menu tonight?"

Well, would she really have any of it if Fjord tried to treat her to that ale?

"Tonight?" Fjord gave a little grin, something akin to a magician about to perform a very clever trick. Sure, the trick was about as complicated as setting her ale down in front of her, but with the appropriate flourish, it almost looked as though he was conjuring that cheeseburger that appeared out of thin air himself. "It's lacking in sticks, but it does make up for it somewhat with a good piece of meat in there."

Amaya would have probably have been impressed even without the flourish, really, but she could certainly appreciate the level of showmanship, and she laughed a little.

"Well, that's alright," she decided. "Slices of bread'll always be an acceptable alternative when a stick's not available, although there's no reason why an occassion can't call for both."

She knew you had skewers back there, Fjord. Jus' saying. They would be wholly unnecessary and bordering on ridiculous, sure, but could you really blame a girl for taking a theme and driving it into the ground as much as possible?

Really, at this point, the skewers were there entirely for Amaya's benefit. Fjord was already giving a chuckle as he reached down to where, yes, they were already waiting, and produced an entire package of them.

"How many you figure we'll need to preserve the structural integrity of a magical cheeseburger, anyway? Or were you thinking of cutting that sucker into quarters and running them clean through in a stack?"

He'd been giving this some thought tonight already, clearly.

Clearly. Amaya was impressed all over again.

"Well," she mused, tilting her head thoughtfully. "The quarters are a good idea; that would certainly be the more efficient way to do it. But keeping her whole is more of a challenge and easily more satisfying. And all of those things are things I enjoy, espectially when it comes to food. On the bright side, I'm guess we'll likely have an unlimited supply for experimentations, at least until whatever the time limit on these sorts of things runs out, so I don't see why we can't go in and make an effort for both.

"Starting with the challenge," she decided, as evidence by the fact that she was already pulling out a skewer and considering its width and strength with a knowledgeable eye.

This was going to involve a lot of experimentation and picking up and setting down of mugs, wasn't it?

"See, I'd consider going side to side with it," Fjord mused, "but that doesn't do a hell of a lot for the bun. Maybe an angle, really get as much meat on that stick as possible, but the skewers might be too flimsy for that."

A conundrum indeed.

"Hmmm." Amaya tilted her head the other way now, leaning back as if to consider this novel approach with a bit more earnest, appreciating the way Fjord used his brain for not the first or last time. "Bun's just extra anyway. They say you shouldn't eat too many carbs, anyway."

On the diagonal, though, now, there was an idea, and Amaya, armed now with four skewers, figured that was an excellent place to start, and four just might do the trick.

Fjord might have been lacking something in the wisdom end of the spectrum, but nobody could say he was bad at strategy.

... Not poking at things he shouldn't, yes. Strategy, no.

"I'll get a bucket or something to throw the extra bread in," he decided, going for a rummage behind the counter. "Tino can dump it off for the ducks or something later."

"See, look at that," said Amaya, attempting to foist the pierced burger up before deciding she didn't feel too confident about its hold and sliding another skewer in. "Not only are we making strides in the pursuit of knowledge with regards to best meat-on-stick practices, we're also contributing to the well-being and happiness of the local wildlife."

"Real philanthropists, we are," Fjord replied, smirking as he set an empty ice bucket onto the counter to collect bun detritus in for the time being. "The ducks are gonna love this."

"And," said Amaya, frowning slightly as she lifted the burger on the skewer only to have the bottom bun fall right back off as she hadn't pierced it well enough, though the meat and the top bun were staying on well enough, "we have our first contribution. One of many, most likely."

Especially considering the attempt was passable at best, making it a little awkward as Amaya leaned in for a bite (the true test of its success, really) without losing too much more.

"Doesn't seem like a half-bad start," Fjord mused. "A prototype, if you will."

He reached for an empty glass, picked it up, and set it on the counter again. Because, hell, watching Amaya and Tino eat was making him hungry, too.

"A prototype," Amaya agreed, "for an improvement on just eating with your hands."

Which, she was discovering, worked better if she held her skewered burger a little bit more this way than that, and she managed to get in a few more bites before the structural integrity started to feel a bit compromised.

She noted Fjord's little action there, though, and nodding at the glass, before taking another bite. "'Zat what's doing it?" she asked, before that bite was finished, then swallowing. "Putting down the glass?"

"Seems to be," Fjord agreed, reaching to pick up his own burger and considering it for a moment before just turfing the bun into the bucket outright. Boy liked his meat. "Full or empty, doesn't seem to matter to the island none."

Which meant unless he started handing out straws, there were going to be a lot more burgers from here.

Amaya had to grin with nothing but respect for Fjord's sense of priority.

"Is that just when you or Tino do it?" she wondered, now fully intrigued with the idea of making sense out of the completely nonsensical. "Or...?"

She reached for her ale, took advantage of the moment to have a sip, and then pointedly set it back down to see if round two was on its way.

And lo, then there was another.

"Looks like it's anyone," Fjord mused, "though Tino seems to be having some luck layin' coasters down first, if we don't want to be up to our knees in burgers by the end of anybody's first drink."
