The Causeway, Tuesday Noon-ish
The dome had been up for a few hours, more or less. It had stayed there, unbroken, the whole time. Nothing had appeared, nothing had attacked, no one had gotten brainwashed.
Without warning, sometime near noon, it suddenly evaporated.
The group of tall, blue-eyed vampires rifling through the pockets of a prone man laying on the other half of the causeway... blinked owlishly, a few times. Then one screamed, and the others joined in.
They rushed the causeway.
[[ want to get bit and turn into a vampire? Want to kill and/or beat up some moddable vampires? Have at. They're strong and fast but certainly not unkillable. ]]

Somehow, in some way, by some grace of some bizarro powers that be, like magic (well, duh, of course like magic), it had actually freaking worked! It sort of really made Prompto wonder if Norman had been right all along, that all magic really was was just believing in something hard enough, but the strange, mysterious barrier had completely disappeared, nearly blinding him with the return of the normal, wonderful, incredible blue sky.
It had to be the trick of the light that he looked down at his hands and thought they were a little glittery; that dome must have really messed with their perspection, and a deep breath revealed that, unsurprisingly, the whole area seemed to smell very distinctly of bananas at the moment.
"Holy crap, Norman!" Prompto laughed, turning to the other boy because this called for literally all the celebration. "We did it! We actually--"
That was when the screaming started. Prompto's heart practically stopped in his chest and his eyes widened as he turned his head back down the causeway. Barriers were there for a reason, little dudes: to keep some things in, and to keep other things out.
"....oh.....nooooo...."
Whoops.

And there went Norman's heart, plunging into his guts. He could see the... the things that were coming at them, screaming and hungry, blue-eyed and vicious, and his own blue eyes widened significantly before he managed just one word.
"RUN."
Zombies were fine. He'd done zombies before. These were something altogether different, and Norman was suddenly very sure he'd been watching the wrong kind of horror movies all along.

and much more handwavedadventure, not too far off from the causeway, around the gentle curve of the island just past the docks, Sidon had breached the surface of the water again, after yet another dive deep down as far as he could go to seek out if perhaps there were any gaps or openings in the strange barrier deep under that water that he might utilize in the solving of this perplexing predicament. Once surfaced, he waved his arm, calling out to Vette waiting for him on the shore, keeping an eye out for any trouble should any appear while he was deep in his investigations."I'm afraid there's no sign of anything over here, either! There's not much water left to cover before we hit the causeway, my love! I'm afraid the island just may be truly ensnared by this most peculiar containment!"

She squinted upwards as a ray of light seeped through. And then another. Until the whole thing just sort of seemed to fade away.
And then she tilted her head a little and looked back to Sidon, a sort of silent, 'Are you seeing this, too?' gesture as she twitched the tip of one lek toward the sky.
no subject
He stopped short when he heard a chorus of screams to the east, head snapping that way. "A commotion!" he declared. "It sounds as though it's coming from the causeway!"
His attention turned with determination toward Vette, nodding. "I'll go on ahead," he said. "I can get there in no time by the water; you come back me up, if there's trouble."
It was hard to imagine anything but trouble with a sound like that, so he spared absolutely no time in turning sharply, diving deep before surfacing again in a sharp, speeding dart toward the sound, hoping that, whatever it was, he wasn't too late.
A crowd of people, it seemed, rushing from the mainland, and two figures...closer now, he could recognize who they were...Norman...and Prompto! Running as well. Not armed, clearly trying to escape....just a little bit further, Sidon....
With so many people, he rather wished he'd had his trident with him instead of his sword, but the sword was much less cumbersome when he was doing so much swimming. No matter; he could make do well enough, and Vette should be arriving shortly to help...
He launched himself out of the water, turning over in the air so that he could land on the causeway between the rush of people and his fleeing friends. "It's alright!" he assured them quickly, unsheathing his sword and preparing to stand against whoever got in his way. "Hurry, now! I'll fight them off, and Vette is on her way! Go let the others know that there's trouble. I trust between the lot of us, we can make short work of this lot."
How ever so convenient that they happened to not be too far away!

She hit the causeway about the same time the two boys were reaching the end of it, gave Prompto a lopsided grin and a wink, tipping a lek in a quick salute.
"Go on, Gunshow! We've got it from here!"
no subject
He may have had a little bit of some reservations about leaving Sidon to fend for himself, but not only did he say Vette was on her way, but, loook at that, Vette was already there, and so he was going to channel his concern into getting Norman and himself to safety, and amybe passing on the word that, yeah, scary fighty people who looked about ready to devour every tiny tidbit of meat streat clean from their bones. Might be a problem.
He'd figure out whether they should mention that the scary fighty bitey people were kinda only there because they got rid of the dome later.
Prompto was also tempted to respond to that salute with a rude but loving gesture. "My knights in shining armor," he murmured as he passed her, giving a lingering look that started out sarcastic but melted pretty quickly into gratitude at the assurance in both that face and those blasters. "Thanks, Vette. We'll get back up. Just try not to get killed in the meantime, yeah? Come on, Norman."
No shame in running when he didn't even have a weapon to fight with, when he knew both Sidon and Vette were amazing and capable. He was going to keep telling himself with each step they took that got them further from the causeway. Not cowardice. Practicality. And he had to look out for Norman, too, right? He was just going to keep telling himself that.
no subject
He was going to keep telling himself that. Telling himself that and clutching to the book for dear life and running, keeping pace with Prompto if only out of sheer desperation and occasionally nudging him down a turn when a ghost up ahead pointed it out, telling him that it would be the safer path.
He ran and he hated it. Everything else, he'd process later.

He took down the first two reaching for him with smooth ease, one and then the other, hopping back slightly to gain a little ground between himself and the next. Wishing again he had his trident to make the distance a little more to his advantage, he lunged forward all the same for the third, who sacrificed himself willingly so that the others could use the advantage to swarm. The large creature had a clear advantage in size, but now with the other two gone, they had the power of numbers, and they planned to use it to their advantage, rushing forward, leaping for Sidon's limbs, his legs, his arms, throwing their weight into him as they wrapped their arms around his torso, one even went for the dangling headfin that trembled back and forth uselessly.
They were so much stronger than they appeared! And faster than he'd expected. Sidon dropped his sword; trying to manage it now would be impossible, he could better shove them offf and away unburdened. He was able to flick one of them off from his arm, turning and tossing it back so that Vette could make quick work of him. If he could only make it to the side of the causeway, throw himself into the water, he could plunge down into the depths and shake them off...
Sidon started to stagger that way, getting inches closer, when the one who had him back his headtail sunk her teeth into it, a deep, deep bite that had him roaring as pain rippled through him and weakened his knees. He fought against the urge to sink down, channeling that pain into tossing another one off of him, straight into the water. And he was just about to dive in after that one when his head was pulled back by the firm grip on his headtail, the one who'd bitten it clinging to his shoulder with one hand while the other yanked this headtail back, exposing his neck so that she could dive in, with a very, very, very unfriendly glisten on the ends of her sharp, pointy fangs.

It wasn't a scream of terror; not yet, anyway. There was concern in it, there was rage, and her feet were slapping against the ground as she tore her way across the causeway toward them, blasters firing in quick succession, again and again and again, at the... the whatever it was who was biting her boyfriend.
One of them reeled back, roaring in pain itself, and she shot it so many times right in the chest that it started to burn, flames ripping through its body like crepe paper and sending it running to leap off the causeway into the water below, still screaming the entire while.
Vette didn't wait to see if it was going to stay down. She turned her blasters toward the one that still had Sidon... which was about the moment a cold, wet hand grabbed her from behind, by one of her lekku, hauling back so hard that her entire world felt like it was exploding into stars. She couldn't scream, then. Not as the vampire's dripping arm reached around to pull her close to his body, not as he pulled her head back by the lek - another starburst of pain exploding all-white in her vision - and plunged wicked teeth deep into her throat.
no subject
Not that the delay was doing Sidon a whole lot of good at the moment, still feeling the dull throb of the bite she'd taken out of his headtail (a chunk of it; she'd have had to have gotten a chunk out of it by the way it was feeling just then, as she tried to scrabble for purchase or find anough room in the design to get what she wanted. Then there was Vette, screaming, shooting, one of the vampires ignited and throwing themselves into the water as the others fell away from him like shedding skin, and he breathed a sigh of relief. His necklace and his girlfriend had bought him just a little bit more time; he reached back to grab the vampire from his back and hurl her forward, slamming her onto the causeway...
...And pulling himself right down with her, not realizing just how good of a grip she had as she'd dug her nails into the gaps of the decoration. He flipped into it, reaching back to unlatch the clasp as he rolled away, freeing himself, crouching down and snapping his head up to assess the situation.
Just in time to witness a face bury itself in Vette's neck. Anguished, he shouted out her name, launching himself forward with every intention of tearing that...monster off of her and practically tearing him apart with his own sharp wicked teeth and terrible claws, only to have two of them throw themselves into him to intercept him, going straight for his legs to knock him back over. And they were just so fast, he barely had time to recover his breath from the fall before they'd crawled on top of him, no fancy and intricate jewelry to protect that long white neck now.
And, honestly, he tasted terrible, but it was all a matter of principle and pride at this point.

She opened her mouth to say something appropriately rude, but all she really managed was a soft whimper, one that sounded all the more distressed as the large red shape in her blurring vision went down. She writhed a little, and her efforts were rewarded with a sharp twist on her held lek, the immediate effect being a little bit like wrenching an arm out of one's socket, provided one's arm also housed part of one's brain.
She gasped, and she fell limp, and the world went dark.

Liam
As it happened, Liam was out near the causeway when the barrier went down. He supposed he shouldn’t have been surprised that there was something on the other side, given how nothing strange or dangerous had appeared inside, on the island itself.
That that 'something' looked more or less human was a little more surprising, but then... appearances could be deceiving.
He drew his beam pistol and fired off a shot towards the edge of the group.
Uh-Oh...
And as luck would have it, that shot hit one of the attackers in the shoulder.
With a snarl, said attacker moved- faster than any human should be capable of, Liam noted- until he was standing in front of Liam, at which point he lunged directly for him.
Liam
And Liam didn't have much time to note anything other than the bright blue eyes and- were those fangs? Before he found himself knocked to the pavement, beam pistol clattering to the ground just out of reach.
He brought his arms up in an effort to push the vampire, if that's what it was, off of him.
Vampire
It was indeed a vampire! A very pissed off vampire, whose shoulder was still kind of smoking.
Not that that seemed to be slowing him down at all. Still, Liam's efforts were at least moderately successful, the vampire snarling in annoyance as his prey had the gall to resist.
Liam
Moderately successful being the key words here, since the vampire still had the literal upper hand.
Still, Liam managed to catch him with an elbow to the face, stunning him for a moment.
Vampire
Just a moment, though. And then the vampire was grabbing Liam's wrist and twisting. Not enough to snap it, but enough that Liam could feel something strain in a way that it wasn't supposed to. And with its prey distracted, the vampire seized the opportunity to go for Liam's neck, fangs piercing it as he took a good, long drink.
Liam
There was pain, first in his wrist and then his neck, and then... nothing.
The tension left Liam's body along with a significant amount of his blood. Naturally, consciousness was the next thing to go.
Vampire
Satisfied with his meal and the furthering of his mission, the vampire stood, energized and ready to find his next victim.

"Liam, Liam," she whispered when she got to him, terrified by the waxy color of his skin, the limp tangle of limbs that was his body. She felt for a pulse and felt it faint and reedy...more than that, she something warm and wet. Pulling her hand away, she looked at it with dull lack-of-surprise.
Blood. Of course there was blood. Another brush of her fingers and she found the puncture wounds over the vein.
no subject
She stared at the chaos in dumb, shocked silence for a long moment, her brain refusing to process what she was seeing -- until she zeroed in on the shock of red on the tall blonde lady's hand.
She knew from blood. Violent blood, even.
"Dude," she breathed. "That is so not cool."
She found a handy length of metal -- some decorative bit of wrought iron that had been discarded during some
handwavystorm or renovation -- and leaped down into the fray."Eat a DiIiIiIiIiIiIiIiIcK!!!!!!!!!!!!"

With a grunt of effort, she started pulling Liam into a fireman's carry, slinging him over her shoulders. Song of a bitch, Liam, did you have to be so tall? Not that she wobbled, even on her heels. "I gotta get him somewhere safe! But I can't fight like this!"
Even with a gun, her aim would be shot to hell.

Dr. Hank would be appalled.
"You could use school's shuttle-thing?" she suggested, gesturing with the bar. "It's parked over there."
no subject
Liam's. Where she could bring him and set it up nicely and keep an eye on him. She wasn't sure about the clinic and, honestly? This was all feeling way too much like an outbreak of lycanthropy-v for her comfort.
"If I give you directions, can you beat off anything that looks like it wants to chew on our face?"

Kneecaps! Good to know!
"Yeah. I think I can do that."

It was gonna be slow-going.

But hey, if it worked, why knock it?

Which was why she was at the water's edge, muttering a little to herself as she scribbled down notes and thoughts and measurements in her little notepad, trying to discern just what kind of distance there was between here and the edge of the dome, wondering what might be the best way to get the Crumbler afloat to get it out there and see if it could do some damage. Sure, there was the causeway, that was always a point of access that she didn't even need to make the Crumbler water-ready for, but 1) where was the fun in that? and 2) the last time there was a barrier was that big dark one over the woods with the giant fish, and they all found out that that had a very specific entry point, and she saw no reason why this one might be any different. And the causeway was clearly just too obvious.
It was about the time she'd finally felt she'd worked something out that she looked up and realized the dome was actually gone; she blinked a few times to wonder exactly how long ago that had happened, and tried not to feel too disappointed about it. Maybe it would be back? Maybe it wouldn't hurt to get some of these plans into actual things, just because you never knew when you might need to make an overcomplicated crushing machine float...
With her brain all up in ideas and inventions, she really didn't stand a chance. In a way, even the vampire who found her on her way back to home felt a little bad for picking off such an easy target.
A little bad.
But not bad enough. And it was practically at her neck already before she even noticed it was there. Startled her enough, though, that she dropped her notebook and got in a real good punch and an offended "Now wait just a minute, here!" before she realized what was going on, blue eyes meeting blue and going round for a moment before they caught the particular glisten of fangs.
"Oh....zards," she breathed out, taking a step back, pulling back for another punch, but the vampire stopped it easily, laughing. That gave Amaya at least a moment to sneak in a bit of an upper cut to the chin, but the vampire didn't seem to like that too much and, still having a hold on her other fist, lost even that little bit of feeling bad, pulled her in, and sank in its teeth, feeling glad that she had eventually picked up on things, because it was just so, so much better when their adreneline started pumping and really got the blood flowing.
And Amaya had just enough time to think that they'd have been much better off with wizards over vampires before she felt her whole body go limp and then there really wasn't much else after that.

like a bat out of helllike a Beaker out of anywhere, meeping frantically as a vampire chased him.He did manage to catch one of the vampires chasing him on fire through a poorly timed series of coincidences involving tripping, the Axe body spray he hadn't removed from his lab coat since sex pollen week, and a lighter, but that wasn't enough to save poor, poor Beaker as a different, completely misguided vampire got a mouthful of Muppet in his search for dinner.

So when Val caught wind of the invaders and took off towards the causeway, barking her head off, all three of them were in prime position to see the vampires cross into town.
"Val!" Eliot shouted, torn between going after his dog and staying back to protect his people. "Dammit, dog, down!"
A couple vamps peeled off the pack, grinning. Oh look! Fresh meat!

One of the vamps, a tall, exceedingly pale man, grinned at her, his teeth in full display as he stalked forward. Another swung out and around, as though to herd the three humans together.
Eliot held his ground, turning to keep them both in sight, his hands loose and ready at his sides. "Stay close. Val, that means you too."
Val growled, every hackle raised, matching the vamps tooth for tooth as she sidled her way back to her people's sides.

They grinned wider, and started to circle closer.

And how the hell hadn't he just started to carry around his damn sword as a matter of course, yet?
"Retreat now," he advised. "Analyse later."
The first vampire, apparently growing bored of playing with his food, lunged at them, and Eliot snapped into motion, aiming a hard kick at the thing's knee.
no subject
And how many of these things were there out here?!
no subject
"Yo, hey, calm down," he suggested to the second one who was prowling towards him and Parker, her cold, blue eyes darting between the two of them. "Why dontcha wait an' see how bad your buddy gets his ass handed to 'im? Then you can decide whether we're worth the meal."
Which apparently helped the second vampire make his choice. She darted in to grab him, wrapping her bony fingers around his shirt and pulling him towards her. "Whoa, hey, nah!"
no subject
But Hardison was in trouble.
Eliot managed to land a palm-strike to vamp #1's chin, clacking his teeth together and buying him a bit of precious distance, then he spun to break vamp #2's hold on Hardison.
Only to take a rabbit-punch to the back of his neck from vamp #1 that whited out the world for a precious half-second.
no subject
Judging by the growl, that tickled.
"Crap!"
Then she saw Eliot get hit, and shriekd again, but now she was struggling with the vampire she was piggy-backed on. "ELIOT!"
no subject
Like tucking his head and ramming into the side of the vampire that was punching Eliot, hitting him hard with his shoulder. "Get the fuck off my boyfriend!" he howled.
no subject
Val, meanwhile, had latched onto Vamp #2's calf, snarling and raging in an effort to help her humans win the day. It was a show of viciousness not seen by any but rodents or gremlins since the day Eliot had adopted her as a wee pup.
Between the two of them, they were putting on quite a show of berserker rage.

Blame Tony for that mid-battle banter, guys. Blame Tony.
It was about as useful as anything else he was doing. Hardison's grip was too weak to do more than bat ineffectually at the vampire that held him. The vampire whirled around, using Hardison as a shield between himself and Eliot's next punch, and then savagely bit into Hardison's throat.
no subject
And then the second vamp leapt onto his back, and a moment later it was his own neck.
no subject
Then she saw Eliot go down, and she quit breathing, panic taking over as she stared.

"Run...mama..." he gasped out, more a whisper of air then real words. And then his eyes were rolling up and he was toppling over.
The vampire let him fall, wiping a smear of blood from around his mouth. "Yesss, run," he hissed. "It's more fun that way."
no subject
Val stopped attacking when Eliot hit the ground, and let out an angry, mournful howl.

Parker punched, and kicked, and then the vampires were turning toward her, but she wasn't looking at them. She was looking at her guys, her family, and shaking her head, all plans, strategies, ideas, thoughts, gone. Just gone. She howled along with Val.
When one of the vampires grabbed her arm, and the other her neck, she tried to bite the one in front of her on the chin. He reared back for a second, then laughed. "You're going to be fun!'
Parker was looking at Val now. No breath. Just-- "Go. Go, go, go--"
Eliot. Hardison. Hardison. Eliot. HardisonEliotwhatwouldtheywantmeto--
"Run, Val."
