Caritas, Friday Evening
You know who else had no idea where the hell his Thursday had gone? Fjord. Fjord had no idea where the hell his Thursday had gone. He remembered the movie last night, but the bulk of his entire day before it? Nada. Which you'd think, you'd think he'd remember, what with Thursdays being his days at the forge. But... nothin'.
This really had to stop happening, Thursdays. Thursdays were supposed to be far more noteworthy days for him than that. Not that he was sure why.
Anyway, he was at the bar, which was a normal bar, pouring drinks, which were normal drinks, in the company of Tino, who... was never normal, but who was no more absurd than usual today, either.
Happy Friday.

She's sort of been
eaten by workfalling out of the habit of stopping in on Friday night, anyway; she should try to get back on that."'Evening, Fjord." It may have been a while...she thought...this summer did sort of all blur together a bit, didn't it?...but she fell easily into the familiar pattern, greeting him with a nod. "How's the day treatin' you?"
no subject
"So far, so good," Fjord replied, grinning, giving Amaya a nod in greeting, and reaching for the usual ale. "Whole week's been quiet, actually."
... He was pretty sure, anyway.
"An' how've you been holdin' up lately?"
Since... yesterday? What had happened yesterday?

"Tell me about it," Fjord replied, shaking his head a little as he slid her ale her way. "Last week was... hell, I don't even know what to make of last week, except that the streets were full of eldritch horrors and I definitely got my exercise in."
You know. Fighting creepy shit.
He was not even acknowledging the week before that.
"Beginnin' to think this is the new status quo," he added. "Exhausting bullshit tryin' to kill us, a week of nothin' to get us to drop our guard. I still haven't figured out what the catch this week is."
There had to be a catch.
no subject
"Certainly nothing I've noticed so far," she said with a shrug, after taking a moment and going back through her week, which, really, safe for whatever yesterday was, had been a pretty great one, all things considered. "Maybe it's not something that'll effect everyone, and we lucked out? Or maybe whatever it is is just lying low and it'll hit us hard tomorrow! No way to tell, really, so might as well enjoy it while we can, and be prepared for whatever's around the corner. All I know's that the Crumbler's been sharpened, polished, and oiled up, so if it goes down this weekend or just next week, we'll be ready."
no subject
"Could be that it'll hit tomorrow," Fjord mused. "We have had a few weeks start out lookin' normal, at that."
And he'd spent them lost in a maze or stuck in a ball or turning into a monster. As you do.
"Guess that's the best we can do, anyway. Keep ready, keep an eye open."
no subject
no subject
"Really has, hasn't it?"
Which they had clearly taken advantage of by not existing!
Really, you two.
"I'm not gonna start speculating as to what we'll have to face next week," he added. "Don't wanna give this place ideas."
no subject
that also apparently ate notificationsbeyond even all the other unexplainable forces around this place just could not be stopped."Yeaaaahhh," Amaya said slowly, then laughed. "And I'm pretty sure if we tried to influence it by speculating on good things, like....well, I'm not even going to say what like, I won't give it the satisfaction, because I'm sure it'll take whatever good suggests we got and turn it around on us all ironically."
Her smirk softed, though, just a little. "I do hope it's not too bad, though," she added with a note of sincerity. "This week has just been...nice."

It was exhausting, not knowing if the island or the eyes were going to kill him first.

And then she snorted, faintly, shaking her head. "Here we are, talking about how useless it is to try and predict what's going to happen, and then I go, trying to predict what's going to happen..."
no subject
"I wouldn't hold it against you none if you had to go," he noted. ""This ain't sustainable for a whole hell of a lot of anything. Business, sanity, basic survival..." He paused a moment, and then added, "I got Beauregard helping be to try to figure out how the hell to arrange a portal home. If it's getting worse from here, I don't want to be in the line of fire."

The half-orc thing would throw people at first, to be sure, but her world was a bit of a meritocracy. You could get used to the shape of just about anyone, just so long as it was the shape of their character that was shaped right.
no subject
"That's mighty kind of you, Amaya," he said. "If it comes to that, I'll definitely have to take that under consideration. Can't stay here and Earth wouldn't know what to do with me, after all."
no subject
"And I know for a fact from the jobs I keep getting from them that Daventry's still hard up for anyone with a decent hand at blacksmithing, too," she noted with a snort; she did not have too good of an impression of that Peter fellow they'd apparently brought in to replace her. "Or you could try your hand at getting a spot on the court during the Knights' Tournament. Now that would be something to see!"
Even the mere thought of Fjord tossing some wet-behind-the-ears knight hopefull off the Floating Island was enough to provide comedy gold for weeks.
He'd do well out there; she sincerely felt that way. But he'd probably be bored, too, if even she got a little restless back home.

The idea of a tournament had its appeal, though it sounded like one of those 'once in a while' events that wasn't nearly enough to keep a person occupied for long. Still, he had to ask. Could be fun, maybe.
At the very least, it could be familiar.

"Some people in town," Amaya continued, her voice shifting with the warning of a possible incoming rant, "they complain about the barbaric events, but it's a tradition I was always proud to be a part of. They need some traditionally brave knights in Daventry; one that can cut through all the new policies and rules, and instead can get out there and protect her borders from enemies. They need a knight who can fight off her dragons. And they seem to be in shorter supply with each passing tournament...Unfortunate, that. You can't always just hope one will show up just as you need him.
"But it basically boils down to five challenges: a trial of chivalry, a test of strength, a test of speed, a match of wits, and, my personal favorite," said with an enthusiastic pump of her fist, "the Hunt for the Eye of a Hideous Beast! If I was competing, I'd go after the biggest, scariest beast I could find, even if it meant certain death."
And, for Amaya, especially considering her track record, it probably would.
So it was a good thing she didn't ever compete.
"As they say," she conclused almost a little dreamily, "fortune favors the bold. I think you'd be a shoe-in, Fjord; you'd blow the rest of the competition right out of the water!"
no subject
"Right outta the water, huh?" Now there was an apt turn of phrase. "Strength, speed, wits, and the hunt, those all make sense. How in the world do they do a test of chivalry?"
He was dubious about his odds on that one. Sure, he could be chivalrous with the best of them, but he had a lot working against him when it was something so subjective as a judgment of one's mannerisms.
no subject
"From what I hear," offered Amaya, "since they keep that one to just the knight hopefuls, is that's it's pretty much just a big getting-to-know-you mixer, where you're supposed to chat up the other candidates and then they ask you a bunch of questions about them."
The shake of her head and the almost-an-eyeroll expression on her face made it pretty clear that this was clearly the most pointless of the trials, and it was no wonder it was kept to the knights themselves, who would even want to go watch an event like that?
no subject
He could probably fake it at least part of the way. And then freak out the entire time after that he'd fucked it up.
no subject
"It is stupid!" she agreed wholeheartedly. "What's knowing Lord Rothbert from Serenia's favorite color of underwear got anything to do with a person's ability to fight dragons and keep bridge trolls in line? But that's Daventry for you. So mired in minutae that they can't see the forest for Local Ordinance Number 357-B27 and a Half on Too Tall Trees."
There was a slight pause.
"Still a great place to live, though," she assured him quickly since the whole conversation did sort of start with her trying to make it sound like it wasn't a bad alternative, "it's just...like anywhere, it's got its fair share of problems, too."
no subject
Really, what Daventry absolutely needed was Fjord and his sailor's vocabulary stepping in and bringing that rating up from an E10+ to a T or an M.
Probably an M.
"So really, just like anywhere. But still makes more sense than this place, from the sound of it."
no subject
...not even close, Amaya.
no subject
Fjord.
Fjord you were literally bitching about adventure three minutes ago.

"Well, there you have it," said Amaya, chuckling a little, her tone and gesture encouraging. "You've already even got something to do with yourself if you ever do wind up out there. Search for the Land of the Green Isles, make history by finding it! You'd have to be a pretty strong sailor to make it out there, too, from what I've heard, so that sounds like a far better choice than just sitting around Daventry waiting for more orders for ceremonial spears to come in."
no subject
Except that they were ceremonial, and it mostly just made him wonder at the point of a weapon that existed just for the sake of standing around and looking pretty.
"Maybe I'll add that to the agenda, if I ever find myself in Daventry. It'd be a good way to familiarize myself with the way your world works, too."
