Caritas, Friday Evening

Fjord was not admitting, ever, just how many tries it had taken him to get in to Caritas tonight.

He was also not talking about the large bouncing boot that he'd been sitting in when he finally did manage to arrive in one piece.

"No, Tino, you don't get to ride the boot home."

"....is that a boot?" said Amaya.

Because, really, what else was there to be said?

"That is a goddamn boot," Fjord confirmed, glancing at it dubiously. "... It's a comfortable boot, I guess."

It jumped? So there was that.

"You think," Amaya mused, as she settled onto a stool at the bar, "there's a giant walking around out there right now with just one really cold foot, then?"

Sure, it wasn't cold outside, but it was an amusing visual, all the same.

"I wanna think we'd have noticed a giant," Fjord pointed out, "but... shit, after some of what we've seen this summer, I ain't about to rule it out, either. Just so long as they can wait a little longer to get their boot back. I fully intend to take this thing back to the hotel with me."

Because getting home was as easy as drowning in quicksand, but he'd really rather not.

"Take it back to the hotel with you?" Amaya repeated with a surprised sort of blink, because she did not yet understand the true greatness of this ridiculous giant little boot. "What for?"

Fjord grinned a grin that you knew was tusky only by virtue of a couple of extra white pixels sticking up from behind his bottom lip.

"The boot? It jumps, Amaya."

Yup.

Now, there were a few extra pixels that could snag on to Amaya's intrigue!

"Jump?" she asked, tilting her head, especially since she had too many pixels dedicated to bangs to pull off an effective lift of her brow.

"Jumps," Fjord agreed. "Can take a bit of punishment, too."

Another pause, and then he was reaching for a pixelated cone and holding it under the pixelated tap.

"Actually a kind of fun ride."

In the boot, yes.

"I'm getting the feeling," Amaya ventured, "that this boot might be something I'll be needing to see in action."

Pause.

"To really appreciate it, and what have you."

Fjord was probably smirking in there. Probably. Just a little. As he slid what was arguably ale toward Amaya.

"You wanna take it for a spin?"

Probably before drinking the drink, huh?

That's what they always said, wasn't it? Don't drink and boot...

"If I said anything other than yes to that question," said Amaya, "you can bet I'm even more out of my usual self that I was last week with all squirrels."

And they never even got a chance to get to the singing last week, too!

Fjord would have had no damn clue what to do with singing and squirrels. Tree rats didn't belong in musicals. Not even magical friend tree rats.

"Well, then it's all yours," he chuckled, waving a hand toward the aforementioned boot. "Just don't let Tino have it. He'll take off and I won't see him again for the rest of the damn night."
