Breq kept the 'closed' sign on the door, but left it slightly ajar to let some air in and in case someone came looking for her. She was cleaning out the basement, carrying some of the contents of the boxes upstairs, boxes that had until now served as temporary furniture. Some of them contained what you might expect; CDs, instruments (including a very nice bass that she hung on the wall, record players and all kinds of things music related.

Then there were the glass beads, a box full of bird skulls, a nest of tiny hamsters and broken pens.

Breq supposed she shouldn't be surprised.
