It was Janet's first day of work that she was not telling her parents about, and she was pretty excited about it. She knew the basics, she barely needed Apu's help, it was mostly a matter of figuring out the specifics of this store, and she was more than happy to do that.

The problem came in the form of the Squishy machine, which Janet actually didn't know how to use. And when she'd asked Apu, he'd maybe insinuated that she could maybe figure it out herself.

Which she could. It was fine.

...It would be fine later, after she got a mop.

Well, Shunsui figured he might as well make an appearance at the store this week and make it at least look like he bothered with working and all, especially since it wasn't nearly as annoying to get places this week and he was technically the owner of the shop now, too. So once he finally got started for the day, he set out on a nice leisurely stroll on over to Turtle & Canary, ready to wave off Apu-san shoving paperwork at him and maybe getting in a good nap...

....only to find someone already there, presumably working.

"Ah."

Well...

That made things easier, now, did it?

Shunsui's initial surprise shifted easily into amusement. "Hello, there ♥," he greeted the girl, tilting his head curiously. "Do you work here ♥?"

Not that he was one to nitpick...he was definitely not one to nitpick...but that...really seemed like something Summer-chan should have at least mentioned...

"Yes!" Janet said brightly. "Hi, can I help you find something?"

Maybe away from the Squishies?

Ah, and so bright and willing to help, too! This was excellent news for Shunsui, no matter how surprising, because this was a significant load off his own shoulders in the work department, and that was always a wonderful thing.

It did put a little damper on his napping plans for the day, perhaps, but, hey, that was one of the reasons he had an apartment, wasn't it? And having walked all the way over here just meant he'd earned his nap today.

"No, no, no ♥," he said, beaming, chuckling faintly, waving his hand as if to brush the question away. "Don't trouble yourself ♥. I was merely dropping in to check up on the place."

Sure. Technically it was true, anyway. True enough, but he did feel it made him sound like he was actually being very responsible for his new acquisition, didn't it?

"Summer-chan didn't mention we had someone working on Saturdays...." he ventured, especially since the...one Saturday he'd been here, there was no one but Apu-san, and now he was almost wondering if he'd perhaps gotten his days switched up a little. They did tend to blur a bit between naps...

"Oh, I just got the job yesterday," Janet told him. "Are you one of my coworkers?"

Look, this summer had been stupid and she'd stayed inside for a bunch of it and she didn't know who anyone was.

"Just...yesterday?" Shunsui blinked, and then he laughed, sounding positively delighted. That Summer-chan ♥! He wondered if it might be a bit much if he were to go and sabotage that spaceship of hers so she couldn't leave after all. A manager was clearly just the thing he needed here! "Wonderful ♥ ♥ ♥! Welcome aboard, my lovely canary ♥! I'm better than one of your coworkers; I'm your boss ♥!"

As of just Wednesday!

He bowed, slightly sweeping his flowing pink haori, and tilted his hat.

"Shunsui Kyōraku," he offered. "At your service ♥. And who might you be, who so recently has blessed my cash registers with her radiant presence ♥? Shall we have some sake, to celebrate your newfound employment in our fair store ♥??"

Because nothing quite said 'responsible business owner' like offering your underage employees alcohol on their very first day!

"Janet Kim. Great to meet you," she said, eyebrows raised. "And uh, I appreciate that, but I'm only sixteen. And on the clock."

Obviously this was a test she was totally gonna pass!

"Well, in that case, Janet-chan," said Shunsui, with a chuckle, "then we'd best start with one of the bottles from the shelves ♥. That way, we can just put it down as expanding our product knowledge ♥!"

He was the boss! He could totally do that!

"Sure, you can, as long as it's paid for."

Because she was passing this.

And to that, Shunsui could only grin indulgantly and give his head a slow, amaused shake. "You're very good," he told her, "I'll give you that ♥."

Maybe a little too good, but that just meant Shunsui had something to look forward to in trying to loosen her up a bit. It didn't always work...it certainly hadn't worked very well so far on Nanao-chan, but that was fine, too, because the attempts were half the fun.

"But we must celebrate somehow," he insisted lightly. "You could hardly refuse a celebratory Squishy, perhaps, considering those are free for employees anyway?"

"Uhhh. I'm really trying to cut down on sugar," Janet said, rather than maybe take this as an opportunity to find out what the hell she was doing wrong with the machine, because she didn't want to get in trouble with a boss who was offering alcohol.
