The Park, Friday Afternoon

So Kanan wasn't teaching this semester, but that didn't mean he wasn't still at least slightly worried about what the new group of students would bring. There was always something, after all.

... Though at least this time around, if something messed with the bus, that was Skywalker's problem and he could keep new kids from driving off with the shuttle or whatever. And so, instead of worrying about that, Kanan had staked out a spot in the shade at the park and was running through Soresu forms again. Something slow and deliberate and familiar, because the Force only knew if he'd feel safe doing it after tomorrow.

Rey showed up as usual, stopping to watch him for a moment, also sort of as usual. It wasn't the first time she'd seen him run through forms, but it was different now that she'd actually used one herself, now that she knew how hard it could be to do any of this.

It kind of made it look cooler, actually.

Kanan stepped, parried an imaginary opponent, pivoted on his heel, and then glanced up from his focus to offer Rey a smile.

"Afternoon," he greeted. "In the mood for some lightsaber work today?"

Apparently he was.

"Are you sure?" she checked.

She needed the work. It'd also been a month since she broke hers.

"Wouldn't have offered, otherwise," Kanan pointed out, shutting off the blade and holding the hilt toward her. "I have practice swords. You can follow along with the right weight in your hand."

"All right." She didn't exactly need to be convinced, so she reached out to take the lightsaber, turning her wrist once or twice to get a feel for it. "Feels different than mine."

"Is different than yours," Kanan replied with a shrug. "Different crystal, different feel. And I made that hilt for myself. Yours would've been made for somebody else. There'll be plenty of little differences once you get going." He pointed to a dial on the hilt. "At least you can adjust the length of the blade with that, once you've ignited it."

Rey turned so that she could safely ignite the blade, taking a moment to find a length she liked. "How much can you modify this?" she wondered.

Kanan tilted his head a little at her, curiously.

"Modify how? I can adjust the power output if I need? But I don't suppose that's quite what you mean."

"Lana was talking about things like training settings," she replied, looking over at him. "Or is that the same thing?"

"Afternoon," Lana said, smiling.

"Hi," Rey greeted her. "Sparring time, I'm guessing?"

"That was the idea," Lana agreed. "Although running forms never hurts, either. I could always stand to be a little better."

"That was pretty much all I was able to do for a while," Rey said, though it was less actually running forms and more hitting invisible people with a stick. "Whatever kept me from getting rusty when I needed not to be."

Lana nodded. "It's good to keep in practice. I'm afraid I have a tendency to let my lightsaber skills slide in favor of research and pure Force usage, so visiting Kanan on Fridays is a habit I try to stay in."

"What kind of research?" Rey asked.!

[unusual_sith]

"Just about anything," Lana said, laughing. "Lately, all about Earth. But I've spent a lot of time looking into every bit of Sith or Jedi history and theory I can get my hands on. You can never learn too much, can you?"

In summary, she was a giant nerd.

Rey blinked. "There's Jedi and Sith theory?"

She didn't even really know how the basics worked.

Lana showed up and waved, just watching his form as she came closer.

And in turn, Kanan offered Lana a nod, shifting his weight and turning into the next step of this pattern.

It was good to be out and just working through his forms. His trip with Sabine had done his head at least enough good to let him be out here with his lightsaber in hand.

That was more than he'd figured he'd be able to manage, this week.

"Forms today?" She watched him for a moment, then lit her own saber and fell into step with him.

"While I know I can get away with it," Kanan agreed, smiling crookedly. "Trying to get back into the habit of feeling Jedi again before new folks turn up tomorrow. This summer's been..."

Well.

Much.

"I've been slacking."

Sure. That's what that had been.

"This summer's been absolutely ridiculous," Lana burst out, blocking the next invisible foe a bit hard.

That actually got Kanan to lower his blade just faintly, glancing her way.

"Hit you a bit too hard for your taste, did it?"

"Until this summer, the most dangerous place I'd been was Korriban," Lana said firmly, "and I was perfectly all right with that. And I had a reason to be on Korriban, and time to learn what it was about. This was just...pointless!"

"Didn't make you stronger, just made you angry, huh?"

Look, just because Kanan hadn't enjoyed it and still wasn't doing well at all didn't mean he was going to stop being a Jedi about it.
