The Park, Friday Afternoon

So Kanan wasn't teaching this semester, but that didn't mean he wasn't still at least slightly worried about what the new group of students would bring. There was always something, after all.

... Though at least this time around, if something messed with the bus, that was Skywalker's problem and he could keep new kids from driving off with the shuttle or whatever. And so, instead of worrying about that, Kanan had staked out a spot in the shade at the park and was running through Soresu forms again. Something slow and deliberate and familiar, because the Force only knew if he'd feel safe doing it after tomorrow.

"Afternoon," Lana said, smiling.

"Hi," Rey greeted her. "Sparring time, I'm guessing?"

"That was the idea," Lana agreed. "Although running forms never hurts, either. I could always stand to be a little better."

"That was pretty much all I was able to do for a while," Rey said, though it was less actually running forms and more hitting invisible people with a stick. "Whatever kept me from getting rusty when I needed not to be."

Lana nodded. "It's good to keep in practice. I'm afraid I have a tendency to let my lightsaber skills slide in favor of research and pure Force usage, so visiting Kanan on Fridays is a habit I try to stay in."

"What kind of research?" Rey asked.!

[unusual_sith]

"Just about anything," Lana said, laughing. "Lately, all about Earth. But I've spent a lot of time looking into every bit of Sith or Jedi history and theory I can get my hands on. You can never learn too much, can you?"

In summary, she was a giant nerd.

Rey blinked. "There's Jedi and Sith theory?"

She didn't even really know how the basics worked.

"Of course!" Lana grinned. You'd got her going now, Rey. "I suppose it starts with the codes - do you know the Jedi code and Sith code? Well, I don't know if they're the same in your time; I don't think I've ever asked Kanan." She wasn't going to assume anything.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Rey admitted.

She had books she couldn't read because they were ridiculously old! Maybe it was in there?

Old books? Lana loved old books!

She smiled. "Right, so, the codes. They're...sort of a mantra, something to focus on when you have questions, but they're also the core of each belief. The Jedi code came first - 'There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no death, there is the Force."

She shrugged. "Honestly, I can get behind a couple of those, but the others make me want to scream. Anyway, the Sith code is, 'Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.'

"There's a lot of theory beyond them both, of course. What they mean, how they suggest you act, how they affect your life. Thousands of scholars on both sides have written about them. But those are where the theories start."

"Those are very different," Rey said, and decided she liked the Jedi one much better.

Eh, to each their own.

Lana nodded. "And the start of the Sith code is direct answer to the start of the Jedi code, but they go different places from there. Sort of like they both start from the Force, but go different directions. There have been quite a few Jedi who became Sith, and some of their writings are fascinating. Probably some of the other way, too, but I wouldn't know about those."

"I'm sure they probably exist," Rey shrugged. "I got to hear about some people who had turned one way and then back again."

Which sounded like it happened way too much! Rey had concerns!

"I also don't know if they were actually Sith."

"It's one of the things that makes me wonder how different we all really are," Lana said. "That moving back and forth. And I mean, I've been taught by Jedi now myself."

"And you seem pretty okay with that," Rey noted.

Though she also didn't get the same read off of Lana that she did off of Snoke or Kylo, and she didn't really have other comparisons.

"There is no ignorance, there is knowledge," Lana quoted, grinning. "While I wouldn't say I agree that's the case, I think it's a noble pursuit. Knowledge is a wonderful thing."

She was a nerd.

"Besides, you just learned the Jedi code from a Sith, and you seem okay with that," she added.

"I've heard worse from others," Rey said after a moment. "Besides, Kanan says you're okay."

Also she'd decided to accept help from Darth Vader, so she was probably going to hear a lot more from a former Sith.

"The feeling's mutual," Lana said, even if she was a bit weirded out by being discussed. "Strange, but mutual."
