The Streets of Fandom, Late Sunday Morning

Bellamy had not taken well to Octavia's disappearing act on Friday. There'd been kind of an argument over it, actually, because come ooooooon, Bel, she'd already been here a bunch of times and nothing had happened to her! And she usually never got to go anywhere on her won, because she never got to go anywhere at all! It wasn't fair!

There'd maybe been some tears, actually.

But she'd stuck around him for all of Saturday because she hated making him worry.

... But then Bellamy had slept in on Sunday and experience had taught her it might be the last day, and Friday had been fine and so she'd snuck out again, still wearing a jacket that was too big for her and that had a small stuffed bunny peering out from one of the pockets, though the pockets weren't filled with cookies anymore.

Because there were also a couple of sandwiches in there. Along with all the cookies, because, cookies.

And now she was just roaming the streets around the island with no particular destination in mind. Sometimes, she hid behind corners when she saw strangers coming down the street - because while she thought she was safe, unfamiliar adults still kind of concerned her - but mostly she was just excitedly peering in through shop windows, occasionally ducking with a tiny 'eep!' when she caught someone actually looking back out at her.

Duke blinked a little at that greeting. People were generally not that excited to see him. He returned the smile though, before looking in the window.

“. . . A candy store?”

Look, they'd gone exploring together, they were now friends for life as far as Octavia was concerned.

"Ooh!" she said. Before kind of a really long pause. "I... don't know what that is."

Bellamy had wisely tried to limit her excessive sugar intake to just the Oreos.

Even grownup Duke would say he'd never had one of those.

"You don't know what a candy store is?" Duke asked, appalled for her. He was definitely going to punch that Bellamy guy in the nuts before he left. "Do you want to go in and find out?"

The shifting expression on Octavia's face were a whole journey from hesitant excitement to her eyebrows slowly starting to pull together, the corners of her mouth pulling down.

She chewed on her lip as she cast a quick glance through the window at the unfamiliar grown-up behind the counter, then shook her head quickly. "I dunno if I should."

"Why not?" Duke asked, even as he decided he knew the answer already.

Bellamy.

". . . What if you had a disguise?"

It was always Bellamy. Just not the way he thought.

"Maybe?" Octavia hazarded, a tiny glimmer of hope creeping back into her expression. "Like Odysseus coming back home?"

". . . Sure." Duke didn't know who that was. Maybe a Shakespeare guy or something. "We need a hat. And sunglasses."

Every disguise required a hat and sunglasses, after all.

"Where do we get those?"

She kind of thought she knew what those things were. Well, she definitely knew what a hat was, anyway.

"Um," Duke said, looking around. There was a Chinese restaurant, a music store, some fancy governmenty looking place. . . . "Maybe in there?"

Magic stores sometimes had costume stuff, right?

Octavia squinted at the store in question, as if she had any of the knowledge necessary to guess at whether they'd have something like that.

(She did not.)

"Maybe?" she agreed, shrugging. "If you think so?"

"Let's go see." Because sure, she couldn't go into the candy store, but the magic shop would be fine. "If we can't find any, I bet there's some on my boat."

Yeah, Octavia managed to take all of one step, all hopeful, before she stopped like she'd hit a wall. And shook her head again."I, I can't go in there, either."

The lip-chewing turned almost immediately into confusion, though.

"... You have a boat?"

"A really big one!" Duke wasn't going to get into the whole not being entirely sure it was actually his thing now, no. "It's on the other side of town, though. Do you know where the lobster place is?"

Octavia thought for a second, then raised her hands and made some little snapping pincer-like movements with her fingers.

"That place?"

They had probably had some advertising outside with pictures of lobsters on them, yes.

Duke let out a little laugh. That was adorable. "Yep. That was very lobstery."

Not bad for a space girl, right?

Octavia's pleased smile was both immediate as well as wide. "I've seen that place!" she beamed. But, then: "... Is that far away?"

She'd seen it before, but she was terribly at judging distances. On account of not having had to worry about that kind of thing before.

"It's not Timbuktu or anything," Duke said. "But it'll take a little while to walk there."

"I can walk!" Octavia told him. Complete with a little bounce on the balls of her feet. "I like walking. You see a lot of stuff when you do!"

'Cause, you know.

Usually when she walked, the scenery never changed.

“I guess,” Duke said, sounding much less enthusiastic. Walking was for poor kids. Which he was, but that didn’t make it fun. “Let’s go, then.”

He started down the street, back towards the harbor. “So, uh. How long have you been with this Bellamy guy?”

Well, way to harsh her enthusiasm with your difficult questions, Duke!

Her expression turned hesitant, before her gaze slid downwards to her feet as she walked. "A while?"

He felt a little bad about that! But he also kind of wanted to convince her to run away forever, so asking was important.

“Why doesn’t he want you to go outside?”

"'Cause it's not safe."

That was a fair bit mumbly. And then, because he was probably going to ask her why that was, next, she followed it up with a quick, "I could get lost."

"Well yeah, if you never go anywhere," Duke pointed out. "You got home okay on Friday, right?"

"Yeah," Octavia replied, already pouting a little. "But -- Bel was really upset."

". . . He didn't, like, lock you in a closet or something, did he?"
