The training warehouse- Friday afternoon

It'd been a really weird week, leading up to what Rey knew was going to be a sparring day today. Which was good. It was needed.

...Even if Rey herself felt a little more comfortable with all this than she maybe had before without actually knowing why. It wasn't as if she'd never had a public display of what she could do before, but maybe she'd just trusted what she could do more now? She had no idea.

She did arm the remote at the door, though, making sure there was enough space that she could catch it in case anyone not Anakin showed up, and started running drills while she waited.

Anakin was really looking forward to this and came through the door with his lightsaber already lit and ready.

Then he'd be ready for the remote firing a bolt at him right away!

Even as Rey said, "Good afternoon."

He ricocheted the bolt harmlessly towards the ceiling with the ease of someone who'd done that at least a million times.

"Afternoon," he replied.

[thatwaslucky]

"I thought you might appreciate that," she said, watching the bolt, and made a mental note to make it harder next time.

"If I had a credit for every time I'd been shot at coming in a door," Anakin teased, grinning, "I'd be a very wealthy man."

"That's terrifying," Rey said, good-naturedly. "How are you?"

Well, he had a lightsaber ready, which was a partial answer.

"There have been easier weeks," Anakin said, "but I'm handling it."

[thatwaslucky]

"Do you ever get used to this sort of thing?" Rey wondered. It'd kind of been on her mind since the beach, especially since she'd never actually really been affected by something like this personally.

So far.

"A little," Anakin said. "You become desensitized, which sounds kind of horrible, but it's the only way your brain can adjust to some of the terrible things we see as Jedi."

Rey wanted to ask like what, but that maybe wasn't something she wanted him to have to get into this week.

"That's kind of what I told someone," she said. "You just get used to it after a while."

"My wife covers American politics," Anakin said, "and what would have been unthinkable five years ago--like a President trying to buy someone else's country has become something people just sigh over and move on from. We got that way with the Emperor. 'Of course he wants to build another Death Star', that sort of thing."

"I don't know much about any of that," Rey admitted. "Where I'm from, a war ended on my planet, and then everything that happened might as well have been happening in another galaxy for all that we knew. Until right before I left."

Anakin nodded again. "I remember that from Tatooine. The only thing I learned about a greater galaxy was from the smugglers who would come and go."

"Same," Rey admitted. "The Wookiees were the best."

[sith_happened]

"They really were," Anakin said. "They loved making me try to speak back to them. I was terrible."

[thatwaslucky]

"Really?" Rey grinned. "I never learned to speak it, just understand it. It's been helpful, with Chewie and all. At least I can translate."

[sith_happened]

"Oh, if you ask a Wookiee, I can't speak it, either. I don't think it works with human vocal cords," Anakin said. "They were just amused trying to watch me try while they waited for their parts to get fixed."

"You made the effort, though, and that's the important part... right?" Maybe?

[sith_happened]

"I was also about six years old, so I think making the effort counts a lot more when you're young," Anakin said. "They weren't expecting linguistic brilliance."

"It might have even meant a lot."

She kind of figured that was why the Wookiees had liked talking to her.

Anakin smiled a little wryly. "Maybe a long time ago."

"At the time," Rey added, a little apologetic.

[sith_happened]

"I'll have to wait for Chewbacca to show up as a teenager and impress him with my linguistics," Anakin said.

[thatwaslucky]

"...No," Rey said firmly, because that had never occurred to her and it could not.

[sith_happened]

"It's probably just a matter of time," Anakin said wryly.
