"Yeesh," said Summer, when she came into the store that day to do all her usual Monday round of orders and payroll and deposits and budgeting and spoilage and pretty much everything because her boss was the worst, "what is going on in here today? Why is it so...somber and depressing?"

And so Apu explained to Summer, shaking his head in sad misery, that, yesterday, when the Squishy machine woke up, it did indeed see its shadow, and thus predicting another year of terrible Squishy flavors.

And Summer just squinted at him.

"Okay," she said, "one, I don't remember that being a thing last year or the year before, and two, the Squishy machine doesn't have eyes, how could it even see its shadow? And three, if that's what it told you, guess what? The Squishy machine always has terrible flavors, and now I bet it's only trying to justify them with garbage superstitions."

Although, as the day went on, Summer couldn't help wondering if maybe she should consider redoing some of the lighting around the Squishy machine to ensure that, next year, there wouldn't be even a hint of a shadow around the thing.
