Post-3MD Caritas, Saturday Evening

Did you think speed dating was all Caritas was good for tonight? Not likely! After the dates were done, there was still a lot of evening stretching out in front of everyone gathered at the bar tonight.

So in case none of your dates turned out to be a perfect match - whether just for pollen-related relief or something that you might actually want to continue next week, too - there was still time.

Or if you just wanted to drink. That was cool too.

(Also, yes, Mike was somehow at work and not at home spending more quality time with his girlfriend, and no, even he wasn't sure how he'd managed that.)

Mod Tino, or wait until Mike manages to pry himself away from texting Brooke, like he's doing for most of the night.

ALL HAIL THREE MINUTE DATES!

Octavia couldn't say watching the speed dates hadn't been fascinating. But it had been kind of baffling, too. How didn't people not get overwhelmed? She felt a little overwhelmed and she hadn't even participated, but it had looked like most people were just fine talking to a new person every three minutes.

Of course, she'd seen at least one drink get tossed in someone's face (and if she'd remember, she might ask Lucifer about that later) but for the most part, it had seemed like people were having fun with it.

And yet it all felt kind of... alien, to her.

She ordered herself another drink.

Larceny had been given a tab.

That was a dangerous thing on its own, but her very first drink had been something sweet and candy-flavored, which just meant that every time her drink had finished, she asked for more of the same. Eventually, even her mermaid stamina had been taxed to the limit.

Which was why she was singing sea-shanties while balanced precariously on a stool, a ravaged plate of potato skins on the bar next to her.

She was doing juuust fine, thank you.

"Okay, scallywag," Duke said, reaching over to move her latest drink out of reach. "Who even taught you that one?"

As though the answer could be anything other than him, even if he hadn't done so directly. (He had a lot of sea shanties in his music collection, so sue him.)

"A boat," she informed him. "I learned it from a boat."

Which was a vague enough answer that it absolutely could have been his, yes.

She made grabby hands for her drink. "My juice!"

That...that wasn't juice, Larceny.

"Nope," Duke said, sliding the drink further away from her. "When you start falling off your seat, it's time to switch to water."

He gave the drink a sniff. "What is this, anyway? Cranberry martini?"

"Love potion," Larceny sniffled. "I was in water all day. I don't need more."

"Not the same thing," Duke said. He took a small sip of the drink, just to see. "Wow, that's like a liquid jolly rancher." He shook his head. "You find the onsen or something?"

Because she clearly couldn't have meant swimming in the Atlantic all day, could she?

"What's 'onsen'?" she asked. "Is that a food?"

He'd left her lots of food while he'd been playing in the woods with Octavia! She appreciated that.

"Hot springs," Duke said. "Like a really big bath."

Which . . . maybe that was what she meant? She'd been taking baths? That'd be one way to deal with the pollen. . . .

"Hot?" Larceny shook her head. "No, the water is very, very cold."

"Cold." Duke frowned. "Hang on, you don't mean the water off the boat, do you?"

Not that he hadn't considered throwing himself into the ocean a few times this week, but still.

"Well, I wasn't going to go into the sad room," Larceny told him, rolling her eyes at his obtuseness.

Look, she'd had a lot of feelings this week, but none of them were sad.

". . . The what room?"

He was going to regret asking. He could tell.

"The sad room," Larceny explained, with a heavy sigh. Honestly, Duke, how was she explaining stuff to you. "The room where you and Octavia go to make sad noises, rather than the room where you go to make happy noises."

Duke just kind of blinked at her for a few moments. She couldn't mean the galley, she'd associate that mostly with food. And she'd brought it up when they were talking about water. . . .

"You mean the bathroom?"

Larceny shrugged. "Yeah. Where you do--remember the other week? You came home mad and sad and then spent a bunch of time in the sad room making sad noises."

She'd wanted to go in and offer comfort, but he had yelped the one time she'd walked in on him when he was in the shower.

And also the water. That would have been bad.

“The other week,” Duke said, something like horror dawning. “You — you can tell? When I . . . use the ‘sad room’?”

Dammit, that was supposed to be a private thing!

"I have good hearing," Larceny said with another shrug. "And you are not as quiet as you think you are."

Right. So. More repression it was then.

“Good to know. I’ll try to be more careful.”

"Why?" Larceny asked. "You're allowed to be sad. Sometimes I cry, watching my fr--watching the TV."

Totally unrelated to the pearls he found randomly strewn around the boat. Totally.
