The Beach, Tuesday afternoon

When you took military transport, it wasn't like flying commercial: the plane could divert with very little notice if there was a new mission that overrode their previous orders.

Generally, though, Steve thought as he came out of the Portolocity (not that he knew that) lounge, they warn you when Hickham turns into...Germany or something. He squinted at the stone buildings that surrounded him. This place was entirely too not-beige to be a military base anywhere.

He hiked his seabag up over his shoulder and went for a little recon, ending up on the beach because Steve McGarrett could never not end up on a beach. The shoreline was decidedly un-Hawaiian, but not anywhere he recognized in Europe, either.

He grunted a bit in frustration and reached for his phone. Best to tell his people at Five-0 that he'd been delayed.

...if he could get a signal. Well. This could be a problem.

What about the slightly familiar sight of a short, surly Jerseyite struggling on the sand after his ridiculous swimming class that he had not at all signed up for? Was that helpful?

At least his clothing supply hadn't been completely depleted with whatever dumb thing was happening this week.

Well, it was a welcome sight, but still extremely confusing. Wasn't Danny supposed to be in Jersey? Was this Jersey? He'd feel slightly bad about mocking it, if so.

Very slightly.

Steve cupped his hand over his eyes to confirm who he thought he saw. "Danno?" he called out.

This was decidedly not New Jersey, Steven. God.

"Steve?" Was he hallucinating? Because that would be on par with the rest of his time here.

Steve moved closer, frowning. "What are you doing here?"

Wherever here was?

"What am I doing here? What are you doing here?" Danny demanded, hurrying over to lay hands on him to confirm this was, you know, real.

Steve was more than comfortable with a bit of Danny manhandling.

"Just got off the plane from Japan," he said. "But this isn't Honolulu, so I'm a little confused."

It was perfectly normal! You know. For them.

"No, it's Maryland," Danny bit out like it offended him on so many levels.

"Why are we in Maryland, Danny?" Steve demanded.

Danny opened his mouth, pointing at him like he had an explanation on the tip of his tongue. Then closed it again and sighed. "I have no idea how to explain this without sounding nuts."

An extremely short, cat-faced teenager wandered up carrying a stick with a soda can on the end of it beaten vaguely into the shape of a puffer fish.

"I AM THE LORD HIGH MASTER OF ALL FISHES! ALL MUST BOW BEFORE ME!"

She pointed her scepter at the new guy.

"BOW, HEATHEN!"

"Um," Steve said, with feeling. "What?"

Mae could answer. Or she could laugh maniacally.

The soda can fell off the end of her scepter-mace.

Well, that's definitely not weird and terrifying, Steve thought to himself.

"You've lost your can, oh, Lord High Master of Fishes," he said dryly.

Maybe they'd gotten lost on their way back from a line-crossing ceremony? It felt hot enough to be near the equator.

"Oh shit," Mae said, blinking down at her can. "My puffer fish." She poked it with her stick. "Thanks, heathen."

"I generally go by Steve," he said.

"Okay. That's . . . nice for you?"

Sorry Mae was so poorly socialized, Steve.

"So, Lord High Master of Fishes," he said, "do you run things around here?"

Look at that, Silver was on the beach too. He had to take a walk after tearing his apartment apart trying to find a missing shirt. He only owned three, this was dire!

Oh hey, an unfamiliar guy. "Hello."

Steve gave him a lazy little wave, pretending to be Absolutely Fine about being wherever this was. "Aloha."

"I'll assume that's a form of greeting." It sounded like one anyway. "Don't believe I've seen you around before."

"It means hello, yeah," Steve said, nodding. "And I just arrived."

Awkward pause.

"Where am I?"

"Maryland." Which was a state now, who knew! "Don't ask me to be more specific because I don't have the answer."

Steve frowned. "I haven't been in Maryland since I graduated from the Academy," he muttered. He shook his head. "I'm supposed to be in Hawaii, so this is the wrong coast."

"It happens to the best of us," Silver said. "I was supposed to be in the Bahamas when I washed ashore here."

"I've only been here ten minutes, but I think I'd prefer the Bahamas too," Steve said. "I'm Steve McGarrett."
