Now that the shenanigans and the summer were pretty much over, Summer had sort of lost her hook to promote people trying her jello shots, but she did have a new idea percolating in her head for it. But with it being break week and the Rocky Horror thing going on tomorrow, she figured it was best saved for at least next week.

Which just meant mostly spending her free time behind the bar giving Tino the same sort of judgey looks he was trying to avoid from her by not reprising yesterday's fishnets, because she was kind of a brat like that.

*Shockingly, there are apparently no hummus jello recipes on the internet, and I hate that I was almost tempted to try and make this, just to see how it turned out. Thank god for laziness and veganism.

"Ok, no lemon and hummus shot, what's the other one?" Seivarden asked.

"And hello, Summer. How are you?"

Jesse sank into a seat at the bar with a wry smile. "Hi," she said.

Summer leveled a completely unsuprised look at Seivarden for the continued utter lack of appreciation for her more experimental jello shots (using lemon jello to match with hummus was a brilliant move, don't even), and a slight quirk of her brow for what felt to her like weird formality.

"Hello, Seivarden," she echoed back with a smirk as she poured the whiskey for her. "I'm great; how are you? And also how have you been here as long as you have without being exposed to the great PSL? Pumpkin spice latte. I mean, okay, fair enough, it's technically a coffee drink, but, like, barely, so I could see why it might have flown under your radar, but it's pretty ubiquitous. I mean, it did kind of sneak up on me s little this year," which kind of had her reeling to realize, tbh, "but it's been a wild month or so."

There was a pause.

"Pumpkin spice latte?" I'm going to stick to whisky tonight. Sorry if that upsets you."

And there was Barry who, for some reason, had a miniature drone zipping around him like it had mind of it’s own. “Hey! You made it!” Barry said looking at the shot menu. “And it actually sounds pretty fucking good.”

Well... at least for a hummus fan.

“Set me up, barkeep. One shot and a seltzer water with lemon on the side.”

"Hey, Jesse!" said Summer, returning the smile easily. "Glad to see the drunken teenage karaoke didn't scare you off."

And she meant it! Jesse was quickly becoming one of Summer's favourite other ponytailed redheads.

"One generic beer?" she guessed.

"One generic beer," Jesse agreed. Well, it's official. You're a regular. "And I've seen worse." A pause. "After last week, I think we've all seen worse for a while."

Just because Polaris made it easier to keep those creatures out of her head didn't mean they hadn't gone there, or that several days of sleeplessness hadn't taken their toll.

"Well, yeah," said Summer, who wasn't even going to pretend to take on false modesty with this one, "of course I did. I'm a fucking jello genius."

Moment of gloating over, she dtopped off one fancy little hummus jello shot garnished artfully with a little lemon peel and an olive slice that was definitely highlighted on her Instagram right now, and then went for the seltzer.

"Coming right up. Also, what's with the drone?"

She kinda had to ask, really.

Ohhh. Okay. Now she got it. Or at least was pretty sure she did.

"I mean," said Summer, "I'm disappointed, but not, like, surprised or anything, and I'm definitely going to try to change your mind once you've had more whiskey, but you're not going to be weird about the whole cat cafe thing even though I already said it was fine and not to worry about it, are you?"

"Yeaaah," agreed Summer, setting the most generic beer she could find down for Jesse. "It's on me tonight, by the way. In celebration of your very first Fandom-related crisis. Congratulations. You're still here!"

"Why would I be weird about it?" Seivarden said. "I just don't want to upset you. Unintentionally."

"Asking if I'm going to be upset about something you do nearly every week is being weird about it," Summer pointed out.

But it was kind of nice that she was apparently worried about it enough to ask. Unless she was just being a sarcastic jerk about it...

"I haven't seen you here before, I think. Or your pet."

Or if she had, she hadn't paid attention to him, but she did notice how Summer looked at him. Oh, and she didn't actually think the drone was a pet.

Jesse took the beer gladly. "I'm just glad nobody died," she said. "That could've easily gone differently."

As Summer began to make the drinks the drone flew around her from a safe non-threatening distance and flitted back and forth.

“It’s in training,” Barry said... not exactly lying. “It’s for some of the drones I’m building for Rey. It’s recording and learning human movement and learning to adapt to it. Don’t pay it any attention. It’s harmless.”

He looked at the final shot with an impressed look. “Shit. That looks fucking gourmet.”

He took a tentative sip. And paused thoughtfully before haphazardly downing the rest of the shot. “I definitely get the lemon but there’s a strong anise flavor. Is that the alcohol?”

It’s probably obvious that Barry is not a big drinker.

"Hey Barry," Jesse said, tossing him an actual, bigger smile. "Did I tell you 'nice work' yet?"

“It’s something I’m working on for Rey, if you know her,” he said as the drone continued to fly around Summmer. “Something to help her training more than just woodchucks. And no, we haven’t met. I’m Barry Ween. Got here about a month or so ago.”

"Yeah," Summer agreed again, "we're usually pretty good about that kind of thing around here. I still feel a little bad about ducking out for a lot of it, but I'm definitely more the 'shoot it with blasters' type than 'think happy thoughts at it'. You guys seemed to have it covered pretty well, though."

“I think you did,” Barry said raising his glass of seltzer water as a salute. “I’m still trying to understand how clapping your hands and thinking fucking good thoughts can chase away psychic parasites that look like horses.”

It’s that type of Fandom weirothat drives him nuts.

“But I can’t argue with results.”

Well he could but it would, again, drive him nuts.

“How’s bureaucratic life post your first bout of fucked up Fandom weirdness?”

I wish I had more happy thoughts to go around, honestly.

"We had a few good people putting themselves out there to figure out what was going on," Jesse said. "Sometimes that's just all it takes."

She shot Summer another wry look. "Going by the files, we're going to get something you can shoot sooner or later."

"I'm not going to lie," Jesse said wryly, "It took me a few days to get all the paperwork back in the binders it was supposed to be in. Maybe we need a better system."

Computers?

Her time in the Oldest House had left her a little wary of post-80s computers.

“... Binders? They are still using fucking binders for that place?”

Barry looked offended.

“I get this place is weird but they do know there is fucking technology beyond papyrus and feathered quills right?” He asked sarcastically.

He sighed and began writing a list of technology on a cocktail napkin. “Please tell me you at least have a fucking internet connection.”

"I think the office does," Jesse said, after a short pause, "But I kind of like the binders. They're a little less likely to explode."

Have a little glimpse at Jesse's pre-Fandom life, Barry.

You were getting such a side-eye right now Jesse.

"Explode? Who the fuck were making your computers? Samsung?" he asked before continuing to write the list on his napkin. "Look, give me a week and you'll have all the technology you need."

He paused for a second.

"That binder comment was just a joke right?"

Summer hadn't actually considered that the drone would be anything but harmless until Barry said as much, and her eyes narrowed a little with the feeling that maybe she should have considered that...

But she shook that thought out of her head before it could settle in and start paying rent.

"It is the alcohol," she confirmed. "The isuzu. I was really on the fence about it, or if I should just stick with a more neutral booze base, since it's not exactly subtle. But I want to really push the Greek theme, and I figure with the water to jello ratios needed to get it to set right, it would dilute enough to just be the right kick and not completely take over."
