The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

There was a DJ tonight, and the axe range was back in full view. If there was anything at the Devil's Nest that made it clear that Lucifer was no longer on the island, those were it. And tonight, Octavia felt kind of numb about it.

Learning how to mix more cocktails could wait. She'd be throwing axes for a good portion of her shift, today.

Duke grabbed a drink from the bar and came over to lean against the wall by the axe range and watch.

"Good god that's hot."

And if there was one thing that would help pick up Octavia's spirits some, it was probably that.

The latest axe hit the target with a satisfying thunk, and she glanced over at Duke as she went to retrieve it. "Oh, you're just here for the show?"

"It's a hell of a show," Duke said, sipping his drink. "But nah. I'm hoping for a backstage pass."

That immediately sparked a thought in Octavia - one that surprised her, no less - but she held it back for now.

She yanked the axe out of the target. "Angling for a more private experience?"

"Suppose we could set up a range on the Rouge. . . ." Duke mused. "Up on the deck somewhere."

Not down in the hold. He couldn't even look at the punching bag down there, these days.

Octavia hadn't looked at it even when Magnus had helped her haul the contents of the apartment down there, either.

She snorted. "I could throw axes whenever I don't want people to come by."

Well, it'd scare off some people, anyway. Not everyone, not on this island.

"That's... basically what we have here, yeah," Octavia replied, with a glance around as she came back to the throwing spot. "Minus the actual range, but I think that's mostly for the benefit of the drunk people, anyway."

Loudly. By Danny. Who'd hovered until Duke finally put her sword away again.

Octavia snorted again. "Who's been harshing your fun?"

Look, drinking and throwing sharp things was different from being drunk and throwing sharp things, if you asked her.

Well, that was one benefit to bringing your own booze with you to the bar. You didn't have to worry so much about getting your drink when the bartender you preferred to serve you was otherwise engaged. And so Shunsui was already sipping from his cup when he decided, after the weekly movie class, that he would stop by the Nest on his way home...

...despite the fact that it was actually out of his way home, but no matter.

"You truly are a woman of many talents," he remarked upon approaching, with probably not nearly as much caution as one should when nearing anyone throwing axes, "aren't you, Octavia-chan ♥?"

At least it was still a bartender throwing the axes, rather than a drunken patron. Octavia was only dangerous on purpose.

She didn't look over, too busy lining up her throw.

"This isn't new, Shunsui."

"No ♥," Shunsui agreed, with a lift of of his cup, "and I have been drinking sake for thousands of years, and yet I can still appreciate every sip of it as though it was my first ♥. Besides, I...don't actually often see this side of you..."

Which he was...mostly thankful for, considering he'd come back to the island to avoid that sort of thing. As well as one could, anyway.

He'd seen a little too much of it in her memories, anyway, if you asked Octavia. In fact, she was pointedly not thinking about it as she actually threw the axe.

It hit the target, but went a little off from the center. She scowled at it, before turning towards Shunsui, shrugging.

"Hasn't been much need for this here." In the relatively short time since she'd been back.

"As a staunch pacifist," said Shunsui, cooly, because he, too, was also trying not to think too much on those things and the fact that Octavia had perhaps seen a bit more of that side of him that he would have liked, as well, but, like most things, it was always there, anyway, just below the surface, "I can only regard that as a good thing..."

Then there was a new cup in his hand, the other set aside, and a reach for his jug. "Would you care for a little sake break, Octavia-chan ♥?"

"Sure," Octavia rasped, stepping off the range.

She had no pretenses about not drinking on the job, and even if she had, they wouldn't have mattered much in this company.

"Sorry about not coming by the store."

Shunsui had to smile softly at that, shrugging lightly before pouring the sake and offering out the cup.

"I'm not one to complain," he said, "about getting an uninterrupted nap ♥."

Besides, now, he could merely make sure to come and pester her here when she didn't.

"We were in Los Angeles over the weekend," Octavia said, sort of by way of explanation, but mostly just to say it. To get it out there, even though it wouldn't mean much to Shunsui. She reached out for the cup. "Haven't felt like doing much since getting back."

Shunsui's brow knitted just slightly, watching her carefully as she spoke. She did know that she didn't need to explain anything to him, didn't she? She never had before, and she certainly didn't need to now, and he found himself wanting to parse out just why, all of a sudden, she felt so compelled. And if there was something in there that she expected him to latch onto

"Exhausting trip, Octavia-chan ♥?" he guessed. "Or just an undue amount of portal lag?"

"Both." Replacing portal lag with some chemical after effects, but, details. Octavia brought the cup up to her lips, and took a sip. "It's where Lucifer's from, and he's..."

Oh, her voice went milder, here.

"Staying there, now."
