Not that Astrid paid enough attention to the daily drama and events around the store through any given week, but it would seem that the store had gone from entirely too much candy all week to...literally none.

Not a single piece of it, anywhere. An entire handwavey aisle, completely cleared out and empty, where it had all too recently been positively overflowing.

And Apu, narrowing his eyes at Astrid once she came in as if she was the whole reason for it. Like it couldn't have been coincidence that all the candy would just disappear once her shift rolled around.

"I don't know what to tell you, man," she informed him, shrugging and shaking her head. "I just work here?"

And so did he. Every day. So if anyone should be suspect in the mysteriously disappearing candy caper...

Whatever. Astrid was just going to focus on candy and treats for her postcards today, then, so at the very least, if someone did come in looking for candy, maybe she could sell a print or two in lieu of any actual candy.

And today was no different than others. Jessica made her almost daily trek to T&C to pick up another bottle of bottom shelf bourbon. Again, she made the entire unnecessary route around the store to get to the liquor aisle to avoid both the squishy machine and the weird guy in the panda suit.

She placed the bottle on the counter and braced herself for the usual "Oh you're new here?" conversation.

Well, if Astrid even noticed a detail like that, it was only because the woman's face didn't look like one that she'd idly sketched before in the past. So what Jessica was getting today was a dutiful ringing of her purchases, followed with a gesture toward the box of postcards.

"Would you like to add a postcard?" she offered. "They're usually five dollars, but with a purchase, they're only two."

"I'll pass," she said, her eyes flickering over at the postcards briefly. "I really don't have anyone to mail anything."

She did however grab some gum and tossed it next to the bottle.

"They're more for supporting local artists than actually sending," Astrid offered, with a shrug that matched the general apathy in her tone, even if she was maybe a little disappointed. It's not like many people really took her up on it anyway.

But at least she managed to upsale a little bit unintentionally with something else and dutifully added that to the total.

If there's one thing Jessica occasionally do, it's give a damn. And with a heavy sigh, she picked up a pack of postcards and dropped it on the counter.

"Hooray for local artists," she said.

Astrid really hadn't expected that to have gone anywhere, but she realized she shouldn't be too surprised. Appeals for pity always did seem to get something done, even if the ghost of her mother's disgusted disapproval seemed to hang over it.

Which made it even better if the money actually did go into that emancipation.

"The local artists," Astrid said, by way of thanks, "appreciate it."

Jessica pulled out her money and gave Astrid a small smile. "Make sure they don't spend it all in the same place."

You know. A pack of gum here. A Fresca over there.
