Community Center Class: Modern Earth Entertainment - Wednesday, 11/11.

Amaya was working on a little bit of a pet theory about this class, one that she felt could only be tested by bringing a movie to the class for the sole purpose of it being over-the-top and bearing no particular relationship to anything going on in the world or on the island. This was also a theory that would require at least a few weeks of testing, she imagined, but the only two people who showed up regularly to the class had drained all of her blood all too recently, so she was of the mindset that they could just deal with it.

So once everyone was there, and gathered, and had their snacks and conversation out of the way and what not, she started with a very simple introduction.

"Nothing too elaborate planned for this evening's movie," she said, "but it's got giant monsters and robots fighting them, so what could possibly go wrong?"

According to her theory? A lot. Usually of a musical or mushy variety.

Which is why when she pushed play and the movie she'd intended to play actually played, she couldn't help letting out an incredibly relieved and pleased, "Thank the stars!" before settling in to watch it for herself, because, seriously. Giant monsters and robots fighting them, what was not to love?

The usual array of moddable snacks and beverages are available, of course, and Amaya's holding her breath about what they'll end up having to watch that evening.

While she didn't always enjoy the movies, Lucille had made it a habit to show up on Wednesday evenings. If nothing else, Tisarwat often did too, and she didn't mind talking to Amaya.

She poured herself a cup of tea, picked up a few biscuits, and found a seat.

Was it bad that part of the reason Tisarwat was looking forward to Wednesday evenings now was not the usual company or even the movies themselves, but just Amaya's reactions when the movies weren't what she expected? Because that was definitely becoming a factor, even if she felt a little bad for it and probably would for a while after Halloween...

As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

Monsters and robots fighting each others might be to Amaya's taste, but it wasn't Lucille's. She did watch the whole movie though, sipping through a few cups of tea.

Though it was a little disappointing not to have been treated to Amaya's particular brand of cursing when the movie wound up being something she wasn't expected, Tisarwat found herself very quickly fully engaged in this movie. After all, her world was one where connections between a captain and her ship weren't rare at all, so the twist on a connection between two people and their giant fighting robot was sort of...fascinating. Ingriguing. Almost a little appealing, as well as a little appalling, as someone who'd also experienced sharing a mind with someone else, too.

She was also a little surprised that Amaya liked it as much as she did, considering how Tisarwat found it to be almost devastatingly romantic...

Who is feeling very pleased by the events of the evening and might be wondering if she could work something up to be drift compatible with the Crumbler.

Which wasn't really how drift compatibility worked, but you think she's going to even entertain the thought of having to be that connected to another person???

Lucille assumed that everyone involved preferred not to talk about Halloween, and her awkwardness about it was still mostly felt towards Tisarwat for some reason, which was perhaps a little unfair, considering. She anyway had no problem approaching Amaya with a smile before the movie.

"I hope this movie will turn out to be to your taste."

Mostly politeness, since monsters and robots wasn't really Lucille's taste.

It probably helped that Amaya was firmly in the 'welp, that happened, let's get on with our lives' now category for this sort of thing.

But she was really starting to have a particular thorn in her side about bloody vampires by now...

"Believe me," Amaya answered back with a small huff, "that makes two of us! As if it wasn't bad enough being stuck with something that decides to not work properly seemingly on a whim, it's got to go and have whims that are particularly..."

Well, there wasn't really a word strong enough in Amaya's vocabulary for it.

But she gave Lucille a small nod in greeeting. "Either way," she said, "good to see you, Lucille. It's nice to see you've decided to make this a regular thing."

"The company is good," Lucille said. "That makes up for the evening when the movies aren't."

She smiled.

That elicited at least one more frustrated, disparaging sigh out of Amaya, shaking her head, interpreting that completely differently that Lucille had surely meant it.

"We do try, though," she opined. "Although, that said, this seems like a good opportunity to get a feel for what you have been liking. This class is just as much for everyone as it is for me. Is there anything in particular you'd like to see more of?"

"I do appreciate stories about passionate love that aren't... 'mushy'," Lucille said.

Amaya...had been worried there'd be something like that.

"I'm not sure it really works that way," she admitted, but again, she very staunchly avoided being able to understand love on any level, especially since it all seemed pretty mush.

"What do you mean?" Lucille said.

Therewas definitely a difference between silly romance and deep and passionate love.

"Well," Amaya frowned a little, as this was skirting a little too close to talking about fe...feelings, but she told herself to just be firmly practical about the whole thing, "it's all just sort of mush, isn't it? Just at different....levels."

"Perhaps we understand it differently," Lucille suggested, seeing no reason to argue over it. "I also enjoy movies about the darker nature of mankind in general."

Or perhaps Lucille simply bothered with understanding it at all, while Amaya...not so much. She would be willing to go out of her way just to not understand it, really.

This path was something she could grasp a little more easily and willingly, though, and she nodded. "That seems a common theme in quite a few of them," she allowed. "Do you tend to like the ones where that darker nature gets overcome in the end, or where the darker nature ends up winning out?"

"Either way," Lucille said, not entirely truthfully. "Unless the end turns out too... mushy."

It wasn't a word she had used a lot before meeting Amaya.

"For those sorts of things," Amaya offered with critical thoughtfulness, "I'll allow a little mush if the battle at the end is particularly good. Better without, but they seem to insist on squeezing it in somewhere, even entirely unnecessarily."

"It sounds like we mostly agree, then," Lucille said, although she could likely tolerate a lot more mush than Amaya.

"So...more darker nature of mankind," Amaya noted, mostly to herself, with a thoughtful sort of nod. "I think I can manage something there. Or, at least..."

She gave a disparaging look toward the TV.

"...try to."

"I know it is not always your choice," Lucille said. "But at least that would be something that might interest us both."

She glanced at Tisarwat.

"And hopefully others."

Amaya followed Lucille's eyes and then wondered why, because of course that's where they'd have gone, who else could she have been talking about?

"I aim to please," Amaya confirmed with a nod. "...within reason."

"Within reason."

Lucille smiled.

"Do you have a favourite movie?"

This is 100% due to some dumb meme I probably saw on Tumblr that I can't even remember what the meme even was, only that it was spectcularly dumb enough that I haven't been able to stop thinking about this movie since....
