Turtle & Canary; Friday [12/18].
Well, at least Summer wasn't feeling bored today, but not long after sending Astrid a probably unnecessary text about not bothering to come in for her shift that day, she was even more glad that she'd given her the day off because she'd received a few somewhat panicked texts from Apu that had her grabbing her blaster, hurrying over to the store, and wondering if she should even bother trying to get a hold of Shunsui to come help because she was pretty sure that Apu hadn't bothered and just went directly to her.
The whole problem with a store that sold nearly everything was that when something decided to come to life and attack, there was probably some of that something in the store, which meant a good section of the party aisle had pretty much exploded with inflatable novelties come to life.
Not to mention all the summer time inflatables that were tucked away in the back room, dragged out of their dormant wait until beachy weather by the mysterious pull of the island.
Thankfully, all the fruitcake that Barry had bought them out of on Monday had in fact restocked itself just as she predicted, which meant that they had found another good use for it, and that was building barricades around the store to cut off any aisle that had been invaded in between popping, stabbing, shooting and punching various inflatables until the situation was a little more under control.
Which made Summer sigh and slump behind the counter a little with exhaustion from juggling all that, but still, she just sort of shook her head at Apu, leaning a little on the mop handle she'd been using as a staff.
"Y'know?" she said. "As long as there's no exploding Santas in the sky raining blood on everything again," and, yes, that was earning you a look from Apu, Summer, which....well... "I am seriously good, but what I really want to know is how all of those even got inflated in the first place."

Upon seeing Summer, Barry let out a huff of relief and then smiled. "Well. I think our date is cancelled tonight."

"Yeah," she said, tone both wistful and amused, "hard to really focus on a movie when you've got mistletoe insulting your taste the whole time and snow angels scratching the shit out of your face if you look away before shooting them to shit..."
Then, a little more seriously, after a thump against the other side of the door of the back room distracted her momentarily: "I'm surprised you're not just balls deep in research right now, though."
Just an observation! Totally not a complaint, like, at all!

Hearing a sound outside the main doors of T&C, Barry eyed the door warily until he was sure nothing was going to break in.
"So yeah. I'm not here to make sure you're not neck deep in marizpan boulders or anything," he said still keeping an eye on the door. "I know you can totally take care of yourself. I just thought you might like some company."
...
"And I'm out of kale chips."
no subject
"Oh noooo," she said, and actually managed to mostly keep a smirk off her face. "Not that. How would you even survive?"
Good thing the fruitcake barriers didn't interfere with the snack aisle!

"Well, I'm mostly here for the company," Barry admitted with a smirk. "I figure if I butter you up you'll give me the employee discount on Oreos too."

Because he was all cute and stuff.

He punctuated that with a ray gun blast to a mistletoe vine trying to get past the barricade.

Were there far more effective ways of dispatching of the mistletoe than a makeshift flamethrower using hairspray and a light? Yeah. Duh. Obviously. Were any of those methods even half as cathartic after dealing with some of the shit she had to hear it say?
Not. Even. A little.
"I do hope something gets figured out soon, though," she added with a sigh, quirking her chin up at Apu and cocking her head for him to go fortify the breach and check for more. "It's impeding way too much on my social life."
Because she had her own priorities, too.

He paused a bit not sure how to bring up a recent topic...
"I... Um. Did come here to talk to you about something though."

So Summer eyed Barry a little with a creeping sense of dread, because that usually wasn't something good to hear even on a normal day, much less when it seemed to suggest that someone had made a special trip through the particular Christmas nightmare hellscape that the island was being at the moment, especially when her suspicion led her to think it might be particularly topical about...erm...the meaning of Christmas, which could absolutely definitely completely and totally wait.
Or be completely ignored for pretty much ever, because that had been precisely how Summer had been planning to approach this giant fucking rock candy icicle right in her very dedicated determination to just start accepting a few awkward truths...
"You know, those fruitcake barriers are tentative at best," Summer ventured cautiously, feeling very much like she'd really wished she'd made them much more tentative than they actually were. "I'm not really sure this is a good time..."
Summer then figured this would be the moment where some mistletoe she missed would chime in with some of the very vulgar and disparaging comments about her that she'd heard plenty of already, but, thankfully, the island wasn't going to be that cruel.
At least not yet.

well. Delicate for Barry.
"I just wanted to let you know that I know you've been patient with me. And I really fucking appreciate it."
And then with a little smirk. "And the next time you text me about the true meaning of Christmas you'll get a better response."
no subject
And felt a little gross about it. Because that mistletoe had been right; she knew exactly where she'd gotten an idea like that from.
But she quietly drew her hand away as quietly as it had been reaching, and she gave a small smile in return.
"I told you you didn't have anything to apologize for," she reminded him. "I...." Probably should have known better? Summer shook her head. "That's on me. It's fine."
Definitely nothing he had to risk going through all that outside for, but she was just going to lean back on pretending it was just about kale chips and Oreos.
And trying to decide if she was going to regret a few choices for radio that morning if the meaning of Christmas became a whole bit from here on out...

He then held his cocked raygun in the air.
"So. Want to blow shit up?"
no subject
...but unlike some people, Summer knew how to take an out when she saw one.
"Fuck!" Sighing deeply in a rush of relief and a big grin on her face, Summer snatched that gun that had been so subtly considered just a moment ago, as well as the one tucked into her belt, and launched herself over the counter without a second's hesitation. "Yes! I thought you'd never ask! This place is pretty secure for the moment; I think a sweep around the block and maybe some recon on the roof is way overdue!"

And one moment to just enjoy that before she popped her head out the door for a quick scan of the street directly outside.
"Okay, we're clear," she reported, "but probably not for long. Cover me while I head up."

Barry nodded and like a well oiled machine kicked open the door and laid down suppression fire at a couple of approaching inflatables and Christmas lights. “Go! Before they flank us!”
