Astrid definitely wasn't expecting a lot of people to be shopping on Christmas, and she could have probably have gotten the day off if she wanted, but she was already in town to help Troy with radio, and she figured it was a good distraction, now that her relationship with the holiday was even more complicated now than ever before. It was no longer about simply being left out thanks to a mother who despised the idea of it so much that she'd throw all of Astrid's holiday related crafts from school straight into the trash, but about loss and grief and things that could have been and small glimpses into storybook perfection and the proof in the pudding that those things simply didn't exist.

Because this holiday season had been pretty bad, but it still had nothing on what last Christmas had been for her.

SO she went to work, not exactly feeling the festive spirit, hoping to be distracted. But she mostly just wound up quiet and contemplative, head bent over her sketchbook at the counter, filling the pages with more and more shadows.
