Annie had picked up the sparkly, romantic vampire books that Allie had recommended, and while she'd started the first one over Christmas, it hadn't actually gotten good until like, seventy-something pages in.

"If I didn't know this was about a vampire, I'd be so bored," she told Tiny, showing him her book as she took a seat on a stool behind the bar. "It's mostly about a girl who moves to a new town and everyone loves her except this one guy who acts like she smells bad."

And the girl was obsessed with that guy. Annie didn't get it. This was why this kind of thing had never caught on back home: superheroes were way better than sexy vampires, if sexy vampires just meant high-school-aged vampires who negged teenage girls.

....she was still going to finish it, though.

Get a drink from Annie, and hear all about how much she totally doesn't like this book she's reading at all, it's so dumb and also she's going to keep reading it.

It had been a long weekend back in New York. One that was both good and meh at the same time. Her phone also exploded with voicemails and calls so she was more than happy to return to Fandom and fade into blissful quiet of no one trying to call her.

And also going out to get booze. "Bourbon," she requested/said hello.

And then spied the cover of the book.

"You're seriously reading that trash?"

"Have you read it?" Annie asked, unaware of how insulting that question might be as she obediently poured the bourbon. "Allie told me about these books. We don't do the sexy vampire thing where I'm from."

All the dreamy teenage-catnip guys in her world talked to fishes or ran real fast or whatever.

"What a shame," Jessica replied dryly. "Because all the girls I know fall for glittery bloodsuckers."

And Jessica was not going to answer that question. Nope. Her goth teen years had nothing to do with those books. Not a bit.

"I mean, it's not really doing anything for me," Annie admitted. "This guy seems like he's got the personality of wet cardboard and he's a vampire? No, thank you."

No offense, actual vampires she knew.

"Not to mention he drives a Volvo," Jessica scoffed.

"Or so I've heard."

Annie grinned at her. "As though he wasn't lame enough already. What, is he some new toddler's dad?" She flipped idly through the book, adding, "I heard there's werewolves, but they haven't shown up yet."

Hopefully they were cooler than the vampires.

"The whole thing is ridiculous," Jessica said rolling her eyes. "Vampires die in sunlight. That's how it should always be. Or at least the way it is in horror movies."

"No, Jessica, they sparkle. Romantically and harmlessly," Annie snorted. "This whole thing reads like it was written by a fourteen year-old virgin."

And yet she was totally going to finish it and probably read the subsequent three books, too.

"Well that virgin probably has a shit ton of money because of sparkly vampires," Jessica scoffed. "I can't imagine how much shit she's earned because of it."

"Yeah, 'cause they made movies too, right?" Annie considered the book and glanced over at Jessica. "It's not, like, a true story, right? As far as you know."

Look, superheroes were real in both of their worlds and apparently that was unusual to some people. Maybe the sparkling vampires were real, too.

"Fuck if I know," Jessica replied with a shrug. "Only vampire I've met is the owner of this place. Of course I met the devil too here."

"Is it weird that dealing with vampires and people from hell doesn't phase me anymore?"

"I mean, that makes one of us, though I'm cool with the vampires." Because what on earth would one be able to do to her?

She pointed to herself and lightly added, "Catholic. Lucifer is nice," and that was an admission, "but that's definitely the hardest thing I've had to adjust to, here."

Like you're as strong as a baseball-playing vampire.

Where Eric is probably sparkling, as all vampires do!

I'm always so distracted by how bad her wig is in this scene. Did they lose the other wig? Did it show up funny in this lighting? Why are you suddenly in a crappy Party City wig, Starlight?

Anyway, I am probably going to be nightmareishly busy at work so apologies in advance and thank you for your patience regarding any SP on my part!
