Since Danny was just, you know, gonna politely ignore his purchase from yesterday until he figured out a way to spring it on Steve, he was checking in on the apartment building.

Mostly the fire alarm system that looked remarkably normal for all the bullshit it put them through.

He still didn't trust it.

"Better not happen again once it gets cold," he grumbled.

Buck had clearly been in L.A. too long because he came here expecting fall weather, not back sweat as he hoofed it down the causeway. Unfair, east coast. Very unfair.

He was pretty sure he still smelled okay, at least. If not, he didn't really care if this guy at the apartment building thought he stank. "Hey, man."

As a New Jersey native, Danny was well aware of the second summer hell of the east coast.

Though the winter was more entertaining for him with certaim delicate tropical flowers wearing puffy jackets to survive.

"Let me guess, new in town," Danny said, glancing over at the guy.

Buck was from Hershey! He just forgot how miserable it was!

"Is there a sign on me or something?" he asked, looking down at himself.

"Nah, it's a real small population here," Danny replied before offering a handshake. "Danny Williams. I apparently got stuck running this place. You lookin' for an apartment?"

"Evan Buckley, but everybody calls me Buck," he said, shaking Danny's hand. "And, yeah. Figured best place to start would be a place to sleep."

"Let me grab you the keys to a place then, Buck." Background check, what background check?

Then again, with Barry around, you couldn't be picky.

"Really?" he asked. "You're not gonna, like, look at my credit score and make sure I can pay six months rent in advance?"

Danny snorted as he tossed the keys over. "Yeah, welcome to Fandom, kid. This is the least I can do to make it easier for new folks, believe me."

"Nobody in L.A. is gonna believe I got an apartment that easily," Buck said, catching the keys. "It's unheard of."

"Well, L.A.," Danny replied dryly, leading him over to the elevator. "You here to teach? Think the school already got started if you are."

Buck almost laughed at the idea of teaching anybody anything. "No, I'm working at the firehouse. Firefighter, not EMT."

Just in case Danny got any ideas of Buck being able to perform medical procedures outside of CPR.

"Ah," Danny said, nodding at that. Though an EMT might be good here, honestly. More useful than a firefighter, sadly. "I'm a detective at the trooper station. For all three crimes a year."

"Yeah, I noticed this place isn't that big," he said. "But, hey, I'm ready for anything, even if it won't be fire-related."

You got tape worms? Head stuck in cement? Rogue animals? He could help with that too.

Buck, where the hell were you for the raccoon bullshit, huh? Where were you??

"This place has plenty of non-fire related insanity," Danny agreed.

Buck grinned. "Good, insanity is what I live for."

If you expected someone who didn't get excited at the thought of a life or death situation...sorry, Danny. Not this time.

Danny groaned and stared at the ceiling like he was praying for the patience to deal with this.

"Yeah, that sounds like a firefighter," he sighed. Steve was not allowed to meet this kid. "Look, this place is beyond L.A. weird sometimes. And I know it sounds like I'm razzing the new guy, but it's true."

"Tsunami weird or lady falling in a septic tank looking for buried treasure weird?" he asked.

You know what? Neither of those things were that weird! The latter because Danny had been a beat cop for a number of years and the former because Hawaii.

"Drunk squirrels spying on people to report the news weird."

"That actually sounds way more entertaining than the regular news," Buck said, figuring that was a euphemism.

"Oh, it is until it's about you," Danny replied, sort of knowing it was a see it to believe it thing. "So, listen to the radio tomorrow and see what I mean, okay?"

"Got it," he said with a nod. "And you're serious about this apartment, right? I'm not gonna go upstairs and find it was all a big joke?"

"Of course I'm serious," Danny replied, rolling his eyes. "Place can use a firefighter in case the alarms go haywire again anyway."

Expect a food bribe for that, Buck.

"Oh, I can definitely cover you there," Buck said. "Thanks, man, appreciate it. I promise to pay rent on time."

Seriously, not even going to sign anything? Amazing.

Danny could go give him a disappointed look at his work if he didn't pay.

He waved that off like it wasn't a big deal. "Folks here are pretty nice if you've got questions. I've got the place off the lobby or will be at the station if you need anything, got it?"

"Got it," he said. "Appreciate the warm welcome, man."

It sort of made leaving everyone behind at the 118 less of an ordeal than it already was.

"Welcome to the small town life," Danny said, giving him the keys to his place. "I'll be sure to flip you off if you miss the city too much."

"Problems?" Rey asked as she came by on the way back from training.

[hatesparadise]

"Better not be," Danny said, giving it another look. "Just checking on things."

[thatwaslucky]

"I don't suppose you've found anything with the holosuite room whole you're checking," she said.

It was never not gonna bother her that that room didn't work right.

"Oh, that's been stuck on an error code that just says 'glitter' so I'm sure as hell not going in there."

Glitter was just impossibl to get off.

"I hate that I'm a little bit curious now," Rey admitted after too long of a pause.

Danny gestured to the room in case she wanted to check it out. He'd stay safe over here, thanks.

"This ends in me covered in glitter," she said.

[hatesparadise]

"This ends in you covered in glitter," he agreed easily.

Rey paused again.

"Have you rebooted it?"

She did not want to end up in glitter.

[hatesparadise]

"Oh yes, multiple times." Which was probably why it was glitter.

"Is it glitter every time?"

This was going to ruin her day now. She was going to have to fix it.

"One time it was those tiny pumpkins." Which was an improvement, but only marginally.

[thatwaslucky]

"Like it was filled with tiny pumpkins?"

Don't ask her why that sounded weird when glitter was normal.

"And various other gourds." Which was weird, yes.

"All right, this is stranger than the glitter," Rey decided. "What is wrong with that room?"
