After yesterday had given Astrid a whole new perspective on the idea of turning into one's mother, she was relieved to be back to herself again today, even though she supposed there would be worse things in life than going around, looking like Ingrid Magnussen. Some would argue that they looked enough alike that the difference was mostly in age than anything else, anyway.
Still, she was looking forward to just sort of getting back into a rhythm at the store, and to putting all the excess Halloween merchandice and candy on super-special, when she walked in and was greeted with an explosion of red-and-green decorations and a tree standing next to the Squishy machine.
"No," she said, firmly.
Apu tried to make his appeal.
"It's only November first!" she argued back. "We still have Thanksgiving to get through! And besides, aren't you Hindu? Do you even celebrate Christmas, Apu?"
He did make some good points about the secularization of the holiday and the fact that, really, all you needed to do was worship at the alter of Capitalism to be a celebrant of Christmas these days, but still, Kyōraku-san was still out of town, and that made Astrid the next one on the chain of command, that made her the boss, and that meant the Christmas decorations had to go until at least Black Friday.
"And don't think I won't notice," she warned him, "if you try sneaking a few Christmas songs into the playlist, either."
She could tell by the reaction that he had already been planning to do just that, and she had to admit, she was starting to feel a little nervous when he started whispering to the cheese panda, because she was pretty sure if Kyōraku-san and Summer were gone for too much longer, they might have a mutiny on their hands.
What a hell of a way to spend her eighteenth birthday.
