Devil's Nest | Thursday Evening

For some reason, the bar had gotten a shipment of gin from some kind of local distillery on the mainland. Which was great, but there was a lot of it, and Annie had no idea what to do with something as fancy and un-blendable as gin.

Google to the rescue, apparently.

Too late, it was on the specials board now, and Tiny had a pair of earbuds in, anyway.

In bold defiance of any lessons being imparted to young people in the woods earlier that day, Gladio was, of course, there at the bar in Leather sans Shirt, squinting a little at the specials board because he did not know enough about fancy drinks or even just gin to know what most of those were, and might see about pestering Ignis to see what he would recommend.

"The last one has an egg white in it," Annie shared, taking in the squinting with a sigh and a little face. "But the other two have, like, juice? But also, Gladio, gin tastes like a plant to me so like, I can totally make you something that's not gin, we just have a lot of it."

"Annie." The quirk of Gladio's brow might have been serious if not for the quirk of his grin that went along with it. "You just started a conversation with me that involved one of them having egg in it, and you honestly think that's not the one I'm going to go for?"

The man mainlined instant ramen and looked like he snorted protein powder. Really now.

"Gladio." Annie almost sounded disappointed, but also kind of...unsurprised. "God. You're, like, one of those people Summer makes the freakin' quiche shots for."

Eggs were good, and they had their uses. They didn't belong in drinks.

"Tiny, make the man the egg white drink!" Annie yelled down the bar, having to repeat herself after motioning to take out his earbud. "The fizzy thing. I don't know how, obviously."

Obviously.

"I don't know if I'd go that far," said the man whose favorite drink here involved Cup Noodle Soda, "but I've yet to meet an egg I didn't like. The fact that it's the fizzy one is a little concerning, though."

Not that he was backing out, mind you. He was now way too invested and curious to back out now. To the point where he did watch with mild interest once Tiny actually got started on the drink before shifting his attention back to her.

"So how've you been, Annie?"

"Pretty good," Annie shared, as Tiny shook up the drink with probably more vigor than necessary (but hey, it was theatrical.) "Things have been nicely quiet between here and my other job, which is, like, good but I know better than to trust it."

Especially given that there were now rumblings about maybe making her host a show, since Citizen Starlight was doing so well.

"You're teaching again this semester, right?" she added, as Tiny brought the drink -- fizzy and frothy as promised -- over and set it down with no fanfare at all. "Maybe two classes, from what I heard?"

As someone who also had a healthy suspicion about it when things at his other job were going particularly smooth, Gladio huffed a little with with a smirk, then nodded, at the rest. Picked up the drink with a different kind of suspicious alltogeher, but still lifted it in appreciation and thanks to the master who mixed it.

"You heard right," he confirmed, giving the glass a tentative sniff before finally taking a sip.

Considering his usual drinks around here involved ramen flavored carbonated beverages, that really wasn't all that bad!

"I got my wilderness class on Thursdays," he said, "PE with Dwight tomorrow. Both refreshingly chocobo-free so far, but now I'm sure I've cursed myself. Good thing we were planning on already doing running."

They could do Running with Chocobos! The kids would love it.

"Aren't those...birds?" Annie asked, trying to remember where she had heard that word before and coming up with an image of Prompto's sweater at the rager. "Do they normally show up in your classes?"

She was also pleased that the drink didn't appear to be disgusting. Not that she'd be trying one any time soon, but that was better than she'd expected of raw egg whites.

"Large birds from our planet," Gladio comfirmed with a nod. "And they showed up...usually in a massive flock...every time we tried to use the danger shop last semester. Prompto says he had no idea what was happening, but he's the tech guy, and he's obsessed with those things, so I'm not sure if I really believe it."

"Yeah, I knew what it was from him," Annie admitted thoughtfully. "I've never had issues with the Danger Shop, but all I ever used it for was to make, like, a theater or a park a few times." Which was probably for the best. Annie was not especially tech-savvy. "But that sounds kind of fun, at least? Are they, like, intelligent? I don't think most large birds on Earth are."

She didn't know a ton about ostriches, no, but she was pretty sure?

Also this was her second conversation about large birds in under a week, so that was a weird trend.

"Well," Gladio really had never thought about the intelligence of chocobos before, if he was honest, and so he took a moment to do so over another sip of his drink, "they can be trained, so they've got to be pretty smart. Smart enough to know paths and respond to commands, like being called. And it was fun," he would definitely admit to that, "just..we had to be pretty smart ourselves, thinking of how to adapt what we were trying to do to fit being swarmed by chocobos, you know? I think the three of us probably wound up learning more than the students in that class, really..."

"Did you lasso them?" Annie wondered. "That's like, my first thought. Or herding them, but they seem pretty lasso-able."

You know, judging by the abstract picture of one she'd seen on a shirt once.

"Nah, no lassos needed," Gladio said, shaking his head a little. "Even the wild one's aren't that wild. All you usually need is a little gysahl greens to win them over...It's a vegetable, they go nuts for it. Treat 'em to enough of those, they're pretty much all yours."

Sing or play the piano if you're allowed!

I have not had coffee and I'm not even wearing my glasses yet. Blaming that for posting this in the wrong comm initially.
