Was Steph a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle jazzed about a certain upcoming animated series premiere, given that she'd been in on the Kickstarter from day 1?

Was the fact that she was setting up a display of her favorite actual-play streaming show's merchandise with a little sign about the series premiere date an indication that yeah, she might be a little jazzed?

Maybe. Just maybe.

Of course, she was in the weird position of having gotten to skip ahead in time to the series actually being ready to watch while her backer rewards weren't quite ready to go out in her own timeline, but how cool of a problem was that to have?

Vi was suffering from another case of itchy feet and was back to trying to get the lay of the land (so far there had been less tree-punching this time around, so far), when she caught sight of a familiar face.

"You find your shirt yet?" Needless to say, Vi was currently wearing it.

"Not yet, but I feel like a clue is right in front of me," Steph replied with a faint smirk. "How's it going, Vi? Getting settled in and all that shit?"

"Guess you just have to keep looking then." Vi was under the impression she was an excellent flirt.

She shrugged, rolling her shoulders. "Well, no one's tried to kick the shit out of me yet," she said, far too lightly. "So I can't complain."

Steph wasn't about to tell her otherwise, because honestly it was hilarious.

"I think that definitely goes in the win column," she decided. "I mean, unless that was the result you were going for?"

It was probably for the best that Steph hadn't seen how Vi responded to a cute girl complimenting her hair in class as it would've done little to change that impression.

"Nah." She may have had some ambivalence, or quite a lot actually, about being here, but she didn't miss that. "Some people just seem to have a problem with my charming personality."

Look, Steph wasn't exactly the pinnacle of flirting technique herself. (It worked for the most part, sure, but it was hardly flawlessly executed.)

"There's always going to be people like that." God, this kid kept reminding her of Chloe. Like... if Chloe hadn't been built like a stick. "But congrats on not finding them here yet, I guess."

It'd been a lot easier to flirt in prison, bluntness was expected there.

And Vi wasn't even the sister with blue hair. "Yeah, well, at least, it's nice to have the break before the other shoe drops."

Given the people Steph had gone to high school with, adding Vi and Powder to the mix might be a lot, so it was probably a good thing those were two separate universes.

"Not a bad place to take a break, either," agreed Steph, who was not inclined to make any declarations about the other shoe possibly not dropping. "It's a pretty chill place compared to... most other places I can think of, to be honest. You know, outside of when some of the really weird shit happens. You've been told about that, right?"

Vi was not, and probably never would be in a place to joke about explosive combinations, but her narrative sure was.

There was always another shoe waiting to drop. Always. "People have mentioned it," she said, leaning against the counter. "I get the impression it's not really a normal school." Not that she knew to tell the difference.

Well, 'normal' was so relative given how many different worlds and timelines people here came from, but still...

"Dude, this place is not a normal anything," Steph said with a laugh, "but somebody was telling me what kind of classes they have here and yeah, it super is not."

She gestured toward the shirt that used to be hers. "Nothing like that place, that's for sure."

"I'm in a class that's all about punching. Which is great, since I already know how to use these, but I always had the impression a school was learning to use this instead." 'These' and 'this' being her fists and her head.

Vi considered the shirt. "What was it like?"

"Ehhhhhhhhhhhh." Steph made a face. Her experience at Blackwell hadn't been horrible, but she was pretty sure that got outweighed by, y'know, the whole situation with Rachel. "I mean, most high schools, on Earth at least, are classes -- mostly serious stuff like math and history -- all day every day, but that school was pretty damn strict even by comparison. A lot of the kids called it 'Blackhell' for a reason."

"Strict as in -" Vi mimed a fist hitting a palm. "- or a different kind of shit?"

"Oh, shit, no," Steph blurted out. "Not like that. Just a lot of rules..." She paused and made a face. "A lot of bullshit about keeping the rich people paying for half the place happy, to be honest."

"Oh, good." A little bit of tension left Vi's shoulders. "I mean, sounds like real topsider bullshit, but better than... that. Bad enough when it's enforcers."

"Oh shit, that bad, huh?" It wasn't too hard for Steph to piece together roughly what 'topsider' and 'enforcers' implied here, from the context, and her expression had some visible concern in it now. "Anyway... I have a pretty good feeling you won't have to worry about that here, so that's good, right?"

"Yeah, that bad. Then worse... where I was before here." She wasn't going to come out and say it, but she guessed Steph could figure it out.

"I hope so." Even if hope was a dangerous thing to have. "It'd be nice, not to worry."

Steph thought she had a pretty good guess, yeah, though she wasn't going to just, like, outright say it either.

"Even for a little while," she agreed. "Sometimes you just need a break. Sometimes life just gives you one before you realize that's what it is."

Kind of like getting a random-ass invitation to play a tiny bar in the middle of nowhere.

Or a rich girl with a sense of justice and too much time on her hands showing up...

Vi bit down on her cynical reply and looked around the room for a change of subject. "What kind of shop is this, any way?"
