Yes, today was a federal holiday but Calvin and the gang weren't exactly from around here and Steve wanted to check on the state of the road in front of the station since someone, Ralph, had put sugar down instead of salt.

"I don't know why I'm surprised," he sighed as he came around the corner and found a pop-up shave ice stand being run by raccoons right next to the station. "You guys got permits?"

They were produced with a flourish.

"You got pineapple?"

Steve, don't eat sidewalk snow.

Since reading about it on radio, Jaye had actually come to check on this place yesterday just to see.

So for today's visit she went with, "Oh thank god."

"You were looking for this?" Steve asked, laughing.

"I was hoping to see someone lick a sidewalk, yeah, she said. "What of it?"

"I think that might be a sign you've been here too long," Steve told her.

[fates_jaye]

"I think that's a sign that I'm secretly more fun than most people," Jaye said. "Or that other people doing dumb stuff is a hobby."

"I didn't know that could be a hobby," Steve admitted. "Kind of want to adopt it, too."

"Oh, I have so much to teach you there," Jaye said. "I've been watching people humiliate themselves for my entertainment since technically 2005."

"This seems like a target-rich environment for that sort of thing," Steve agreed.

"We've talked about the gremlin bites," she said. "If I don't change into something on weird weekends I just walk around with a camera. Then you look back at old pictures on bad days..."

"That sounds hilarious," Steve admitted. "What's your favorite weekend?"

"When my friends turn into kids," Jaye answered instantly. "I'm not going to watch anyone, but..."

Steve laughed. "I was a quiet kid. Um. Both times."

[fates_jaye]

"All kids do dorky things sometimes, I coulda gotten something out of you," she assured him.

"Seriously?" This was going to be blamed fully on you, Steve.

Steve shrugged. "I didn't give them the idea. I'm kind of afraid they're franchising with Kamekona."

Danny squinted over at the most enterprising raccoon over there. "If that rodent does a shaka sign, I'm leaving."

"That would be amazing," Steve said. "I'm gonna teach 'em."

"Steven." What did Danny really expect here?

[grenadesandohana]

"Are you saying I shouldn't share my culture?" Steve replied.

[hatesparadise]

"I'm saying you encourage this," Danny countered.

"I think if you don't see why a bunch of raccoons throwing up the shaka is hilarious, you might need more joy in your life," Steve said.

"They're also the reason you had to get a rabies shot." JUST AS AN FYI, STEVEN.

"But it's still up to date," Steve said perkily.

[hatesparadise]

"I'm going to yell if you need another one." He'd yell regardless.

[grenadesandohana]

"I'm not going to need another one," Steve said.
